This is an entertaining read if you don’t mind hearing the word ‘society’ numerous times throughout every chapter. Not a very insightful story nor very deep. However, the writer is clearly gifted with a fabulous sense of humor, even if it does insult the times and people without accurately understanding those who actually lived in them.

Witty! Mature! Clever! Judith Hale Everett has cleverly written a novel that plays homage to both the great Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen. Using the context of the gothic novel craze by young women during the Regency Period like Austen’s ‘Northanger Abbey’, Judith expounds Georgette Heyer’s short story, ‘A Husband for Fanny’ into a hilarious believable reality right out of Regency England. No thrusting of modern opinions or university revisionism into this story. It is written within the framework of the customs of the day and the context of their purposes. Refreshing and brilliant! I have finally found a new author to grace the shelves next to the girls at last.

The narrator had a lovely voice. His performance was acceptable BUT his interpretation of the dialogue was immature and histrionic when it should have been measured; dramatic when it should reflect icy distain. This author has such subtle high level writing dialogue it is a crime when the narrator doesn’t get it. He obviously doesn’t understand the point of the story or complex characters that draw it out. The story itself is brilliant. It lives in the context of its prequel ’These Old Shades’ and places its characters within the super upper class of the English/French world, where the characters walk the narrow line of privilege and tolerance, licentious wildness versus honor, where duty to place and name in the upper class play a tug of war among every other need or want or desire. This is a marvelous story, I recommend the book in any form, but I caution you. Georgette Heyer was a high level thinker. She can tell a light story within a complex world. Try not to miss out on that.

Not a fan of Sarah Edens Western’s. The plots are weak the and the characters shallow. For example the main character should have been an interesting young woman but she consistently reacts to very difficult situations like an emotionally immature child. Not getting what she wants then getting what she wants and then not being able to process the reality of what it takes to get there. If you want something light but need something interesting and intelligent her work will irritate you. I rate her as a juvenile writer on par with Victoria Holt.

This novel revolves around the problem of the Prince Regent’s spoiled circle of friends holding important government positions during a time of war and the true problems Wellington and the nation had dealing with French spies.

Enter Georgette Heyer with her impressive knowledge of the times and customs of the regency period and she effortlessly writes a witty, hilarious spy thriller placed in the middle of a domestic crisis. It has her distinctive subtle style that turns the most chance story into a delightful romance. Her work is so well grounded in the minute details of history that her books build upon facts flushed out in other works. I found myself remembering Wellington’s comments in her “Spanish Bride” and Ross Poldark’s thoughts in the famous Winston Graham novels.

I always walk away feeling richer from a Georgette Heyer novel. This one like everything she writes is genius at its best.

Wonderful narration!

This addition to the Poldark books brought a maturity to the older characters and added to the depth of history that affected life in Cornwall. I thought the debate within Ross regarding his reflections on responsibility and revolution were thoughtful and provoking. The entire story became a foil of opposite ideas and colliding hypocrisy mixed up in the complexities of human nature and life within the larger events of its existence.

At last, a beautiful cheeky narration of a superb story. Jenny Agutter hit off the text in perfect character. I have never enjoyed Emma more.

Laura Kinsale reaches way beyond the typical Romance Genre in For My Lady’s Heart. Her powerful story is strengthened by beautiful writing, and her attention to historical detail places her characters so solidly in the setting it is hard to imagine this story not being a resurrected text from the times. It is a fantastic plot worthy of a movie, worthy of being read for generations to come.

The narrator, Nicholas Boulton, brings it all beautifully to life. The voices are perfect. I can’t imagine them any other way. I now find the audio more enjoyable than the many times over the years I’ve read it through the pages of a book.

It is a story for men and women alike. Anyone who wants to enter the Medieval world will enjoy the range of battle, intrigue, and historical detail. The smut is dwarfed by the power of the plot but somehow necessary. For this reason I would recommend this story to a mature audience.

A perfect regency story rich with historic and cultural perspectives. This tells the story of what upper class Britain thought and how it behaved in the period before and during the Battle of Waterloo.
Covering the story with a glimpse into the world of the ‘cit’s’ verses the aristocracy Adam leaves the peninsular wars against Napoleon to find his inheritance in deep financial distress. The reader hears the story with plenty of thoughts as he navigates his circumstances as an educated gentleman whom is challenged in choosing his duty over preference and kindness and manners over feelings. (It hits like a breath of fresh air in this self centered feeling centered world.)
As always Heyer is full of fun and good humor giving you plenty to chuckle over if not laugh out loud. She has the most wonderful knack of giving you a light story while filling you with interesting perspective. It pairs beautifully with Heyer’s substantially researched An Infamous Army both which end at the conclusion of the Battle of Waterloo.
The recording feels old but is beautifully narrated by Nash, one of the only narrators to hit British characters spot on.
