A haunting and beautiful memoir from a Cambodian refugee who lost her country and her family during Pol Pot's genocide in the 1970s but who finds hope by reclaiming the recipes she tasted in her mother's kitchen.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

The story builds as each version of the story is told. I almost quit during the first section because I didn’t realize that what Diaz was doing. Compelling.

In Skyfaring, airline pilot and flight romantic Mark Vanhoenacker shares his irrepressible love of flying on a journey from day to night, from new ways of mapmaking and the poetry of physics to the names of winds and the nature of clouds. Here, anew, is the simple wonder and transcendent joy of motion and the remarkable new perspectives that height and distance bestow on everything we love.

What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There's no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson. But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

An unusual opportunity to learn from a master
Revisado: 02-08-18
Would you listen to Astrophysics for People in a Hurry again? Why?
Yes, because there is a lot to learn that can't be taken in in just one pass
What other book might you compare Astrophysics for People in a Hurry to and why?
A Brief History of Time, which I have also read but can't say I understood. This one is much more comprehensible to an elementary astrophysicist
What about Neil deGrasse Tyson’s performance did you like?
His delight in sharing his knowledge of the cosmos with the listener and his ability make such a complex topic understandable to the layman
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. This one is better taken in smaller doses that allow for repetitions of some chapters

Historia
When a fragile peace breaks down and promptly devolves into a rapidly escalating shooting war between Pakistan and India, the U.S. must intervene. With only hours remaining before the conflict reaches a deadly point of no return, the White House must find a way to shut it down immediately or risk the likelihood of a new global war. A radical cleric has become the democratically elected president of Pakistan and uses a brutal incident in the Kashmir region as an opportunity to ignite war with India. The highly lethal conventional war spins out of control when Pakistan initiates a nuclear attack.

Seriously Jingoistic
Revisado: 02-08-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A more balance story that doesn't deify US special forces and demonize Arabs. The world doesn't need more excuses to hate those we don't understand
Would you ever listen to anything by Ben Coes again?
No
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

A different view of a story we think we know
Revisado: 11-14-12
What did you love best about In the Garden of Beasts?
the details of their lives in Berlin in the 30's
What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Garden of Beasts?
Memorably sad, when the ambassador is removed for his principled public stand against the Nazi excesses.
What aspect of Stephen Hoye’s performance would you have changed?
His intonation can be singsong at times. His voicing of the quotations is very good, but the singsong detracts somewhat from the narration ("singsong" may be the wrong word but that is the best I can come up with to describe the intonation of his sentences)
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
See Nazi Berlin through the eyes of an American girl

What, you ask, is a Fred Fitch? Well, for one thing, Fred Fitch is the man with the most extensive collection of fake receipts, phony bills of sale, and counterfeit sweepstakes tickets in the Western hemisphere, and possibly in the entire world. For another thing, Fred Fitch may be the only New York City resident in the twentieth century to buy a money machine.

Where does God Save the Mark rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Near the top. Bank Shot will always be my favorite, but God Save the Mark was also pretty great. Donald Westlake finds a way to make every crime worth laughing about.
What was one of the most memorable moments of God Save the Mark?
When Harry realized that someone had been shooting at him
What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?
Great voices for each of the many characters
If you could take any character from God Save the Mark out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Donald Westlake. I want to know where he gets his ideas.

Historia
Covering the pivotal years 1861-1864, General Ulysses S. Grant leads us in his own words from Fort Sumter to his appointment as commander of all the armies of the North. Grant remembers his experiences with the key players of the day, takes us onto the battlefields, and recounts the twists and turns of fate. Grant was a failed peacetime soldier, failed farmer, failed woodcutter, failed bill collector, and 38-year-old clerk in a harness store in the spring of 1861. By 1864, he was directing all the Union forces.

Great book - Tough listen
Revisado: 11-04-09
This is justifiably praised as one of the classics of American literature and one of the best autobiographies ever written, but I found it impossible to listen to because it was so detailed in that I wanted to re-read certain sections and to have a map handy for frequent reference - both quite difficult in this format.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Highly overrated
Revisado: 12-26-07
After all of the glowing recommendations I had heard for this book, I expected something more than this naive fairy tale for adults. I enjoyed the picture that the book painted of life in the circus but the mostly one-dimensional characters and the many over-obvious plot devices made me distrust the one element of this disappointing book that I did enjoy. Read "Modoc" instead if you are interested in elephants and the circus
