Enjoyed this one immensely. Lucy Foley, may we have more, please? I liked(the likable)/disliked(the unlikable) characters, liked the setting, the slow unwinding of the whole story…and the ending…well played. Nicely done.

Loved it! This one was right up my alley and I couldn’t stop listening. The story was intense, the characters were interesting and well developed, and Imogen Church’s narration was fantastic! Perfect summer listen.

HAHA! Also, kudos to Ruth Ware for the cameo (and the context in which it appeared) of The Woman in Cabin 10!!! Well played!😆

A great listen that left me feeling happy, in spite of the murders! 😆 The story and narration were terrific, the characters were well developed, and I love when a story ends well and leaves me smiling. Spoiler? 😬 Will definitely be looking for more by this author.

This book is a showcase for JK Rowling’s amazing creativity and incredible story-telling skill. In Casual Vacancy, Rowling adeptly weaves many disparate threads into a mind boggling commentary on social and political issues, the human condition, poverty, pettiness, ego, moral flexibility, disaster via naïveté, and so much more. This book had me thinking about the storyline even when I wasn’t listening. The characters are complex and well written - and you keep rooting for (some of) them to the end, even though you know it can’t end well for them. The narrator did a terrific job too!

This book is a dark, emotional rollercoaster ride; you want to stop but feel compelled to continue. You can see the disaster coming but are powerless to stop it and hope for redemption to the very end.

A fantastic, horrifying, amazing, heart wrenching book. This is a book that will make an aspiring writer shut down the laptop and go work in the garden because, this book…is a monumental work.

The stories were just the right amount of ‘scary’ and the narrator did a terrific job. Just right for cool, dark fall nights.

Full disclosure, I’m only partially through this book and am enjoying it but then this happened…

Agent P: there’s a murderer and we are his targets. The murder will try to kill us…dead.

Dr. Scientist: mkay

Agent P: go to this dark creepy place alone and find more information on the murderer

Dr. Scientist: mkay

Agent P: Be safe

Dr. Scientist: mkay

Later…

Dr. Scientist goes to the dark creepy place and the door to the dark creepy place, which should be locked, isn’t. Does Dr. Scientist stroll on in? Of course she does!

Dr. Scientist is meeting Character C who is supposed to be working in the dark creepy place, but Character C is not there. No worries though, he left a note. The note says ‘hey, this place is dark and creepy AND labyrinthine, for sure, but I’m working waaaaaaay in the back where it’s even darker and creepier - and also, good luck finding me, but come on back, mkay?’

Does Dr. Scientist leave and find THE COP WHO IS ALSO WORKING ON THE CASE? Nope. Maybe give someone a call? Does she find anyone else who might assist her? How about a flashlight or a weapon? Is she even a little bit suspicious of the situation? No, no, no, and heck no.

It’ll still be a good book, but is anyone else annoyed by how the supposedly intelligent characters are written with ZERO common sense or even short term memory (see above ‘a murderer wants to kill you’ conversation).

WHEW! I feel better for venting, but that BS ^ ruins a perfectly good plot line. I mean honestly, if you have to make your character, WHO IS A GOTDANG DOCTOR, do dumb things that even the reader sees as idiotic…well, Preston and Child, you need to try a little harder.

But then Preston and Child are laughing all the way to the bank while I complain about a book I PAID FOR - and will buy more…so who’s really the dumb-dumb? :-/

Thank you, John Scalzi, for a fun and imaginative novel - and for the (unintentional, I think?) tutorial on using gender-neutral pronouns correctly (seriously, I’ve struggled). A novel where the underestimated/underdog/everyman overcomes his fears to do the right - and as it turns out - heroic thing. I love that.

Wil Wheaton does a FANTASTIC job with the narration (as always).

A light and funny novel that leaves you smiling and feeling a little more optimistic. I know, I know. It’s a NOVEL. The characters and Kaiju aren’t real. But still, if we follow their lead, we’ll be better REAL characters…and maybe somewhere, Kaiju DO exist. :-)

HAHA! At the end of chapter 55, I almost stopped listening. I already had my review titled ‘HATED IT!!!’.

But I stayed through ALL the chapters- and you should too! This was a terrific nail-biter. Ruth Ware delivers all the feels in her writing: anxiety, uncertainty, the warmth of friendship, terror…

And as always multi-talented Imogen Church does a fantastic job with the narration (if you haven’t listened to her Death and the Burlesque Maiden, which she wrote AND narrated, GET IT NOW!! It’s fantastic.)

We’ll done, Ruth Ware. You got me with this one. You, tricky author, you really got me!

Thanks to Ruth Ware and Imogen Church for a terrific listen. 😊
