Historia
Impassioned antislavery rhetoric made antebellum Boston famous as the nation’s hub of radical abolitionism. In fact, the city was far from a beacon of equality. In No Right to an Honest Living, historian Jacqueline Jones reveals how Boston was the United States writ small—a place where the soaring rhetoric of egalitarianism was easy, but justice in the workplace was elusive. Highlighting the everyday struggles of ordinary Black workers, this book shows how injustice in the workplace prevented Boston—and the United States—from securing true equality for all.

Too much repititive detail, to the point that I ended up disliking the book would not recommend to my friends.

Informative and humbling
Revisado: 09-08-24
Comprehensive and well organized. I have the book in print version, but also purchased it on audio in an attempt to read it faster. Definitely reads more like a history book than books that have a more narrative style to them, but it had no problem holding my interest. While I knew that life was not easy for any Blacks at that time, I at least thought that Boston was a bit of an oasis. Unfortunately, I realized that a lot of the support for our Black compatriots was in word only. Boston talked the talk, but in no means walked the walk.

Historia
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her.

Ends on a cliffhanger
Revisado: 10-06-23
Enjoyed it right up until the few minutes. I couldn’t figure out how she was going to finish the story in such little time. She didn’t is how. Ends with multiple cliffhangers, and no resolution.

Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

Stayed with it only to see if it would get any better…
Revisado: 01-10-23
I do not get the hype here. I enjoyed A.J. Fikry and Tomorrow was on so many best book lists that I thought it would be a slam dunk. Not so, unfortunately. This book was tedious from the very beginning. None of the characters were particularly engaging and the story line not compelling. I stuck with it, thinking it was just a slow start, but it remained so right up until the end. This was honestly a chore to listen to, and I had to force myself to continue with it. Perhaps it’s better in the book form; the narration style is flat and just adds to the monotonous feel of the entire book.

Historia
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

I was hooked within the first 5 mins. This book has it all: history, pirates, the mafia, science to nerd out over, mystery. Seriously so good!

Historia
Felicia “Fe Fe” Stevens is living with her vigilantly loving mother and older teenaged brother, whom she adores, in building 4950 of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes. It’s the summer of 1999, and her high-rise is next in line to be torn down by the Chicago Housing Authority. She, with the devout Precious Brown and Stacia Buchanan, daughter of a Gangster Disciple Queen-Pin, form a tentative trio and, for a brief moment, carve out for themselves a simple life of Double Dutch and innocence.

Favorite New Author Award!
Revisado: 10-19-22
I read Last Summer on State Street soon after it was published after seeing it mentioned on several award lists. It was so good I didn’t want it to end. Its portrayal of family, friendship, and home was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Here’s hoping the author’s next book is already in the works!
