Although I loved John Sharian’s rendition of all the Black Jewels characters, somewhere along the way he lost me when he turned Jaenelle’s voice into a thick pub-worthy Irish brogue. Not sure why the editors would allow the narrator such a liberty with the main character, esp since prior renditions had been in her appropriate “midnight voice”.

Mr Sharian went too far OFF character with the protagonist for no reason. And though I absolutely LOVE the series and have both read and listened to it several times, I die a little inside each time Mr Sharian turns Jaenelle into Lucky Charms...

In this return to Ebon Rhi and Ebon Askavi, Mr Littman did a fine job, and Lucivar’s new voice grew on me. Its really not that much of a difference from Sharian’s. The Sadist’s voice may need a little extra oomph. I’m sure Mr Littman will only improve with each new book. I, for one, am very pleased with the
Upgrade

He also did an excellent job with the mean girl voices. Another great story in the Black Jewels realm that had me going through so many different emotions thoughout the story so much so that I already started the next in the series. If you love the Black Jewels World, this book is a worty return to that world.

Though a relatively new fan of Ms Blakely, the voice of Richard Armitage gave me heart palpitations and I kept going back to relisten to some of his steamy scenes. Sexy voice and sexy man! (Yes, I googled him!) The story itself made me revisit old lost desires of living in Paris, the City of Love, and meeting my dashing Prince. I absolutely loved this story. I am currently catching up on this author's work and will certainly keep Richard Armitage on my list of most desired narrators. Happy reading!

Why the hell is Janelle suddenly speaking Irish??!

Why did the narrator change Janelle’s voice into a sniveling Irish peasant? He completely ruined the story for me...

Why did he do that? She’s not even the same character from the first 5 books!

This book is just more repetitive dialogue from LKH's last dozen books or so, where she drones on and on explaining and defending her life choices and her hangups via her vast array of bland, boring characters. I used to love these guys, but with each new book, they devolve more and more into characters I no longer care about, and whose love life and emotions now bore me to tears. I think LKH can salvage this series if she focused more on action, preternatural police procedural, and ripping, emotional suspense like in her early books. I really miss THAT bad-ass Anita Blake. I miss the emotional strife Richard caused Anita. He went from being one of the main protagonanists to being just unceremoniously pushed aside and his angst was never truly resolved. I even miss Willie, that undead ne'er do well. And where the hell did the zombie raising go? I want more zombie action! I miss the werewolves and their feral thirst for blood and status and not just boring sex and food for boring old JC. Micah was once my favorite because he was such an enigma, but now I just dgaf about him anymore. And where once I found Nathaniel endearing, I find myself hoping LKH will kill him off in grisly fashion just to bring some life back to her merry band of excessively chit-chatting teenagers. Even some real S&M would be appreciated. The sex really needs some spicing up. Please, LKH! Kill off Nathaniel! Or better yet, kill off Jean-Claude! I'm even willing to sacrfice Micah! Bring Anita Blake back to life! 😣

But if you love them, good on you!

The story is kinda going nowhere for me. The narrator is ok but the accents are really distracting and grate on my nerves. Because it's LKH's novel, I will try the 2nd book in the series to see if it picks up speed. I'm a fan of the first Anita Blake novels. I really wanted to love this series. I know I started it late, but I'm just not impressed yet...
