Historia
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Just too slow, like honey from a cold shelf
Revisado: 03-04-25
This book just can't get started. My favorite author is Sandford. His books invariably start with a murder in the first chapter, frequently on page one. I hate books that require chapters of character development before any action takes place. If you like those types of books however, this book is for you.

Historia
Johnny Shooter was sentenced to hang at noon. But Judge Isaac Parker, widely known as the "Hanging Judge", made Johnny an offer he couldn't refuse. The judge made him a Deputy United State Marshal, then sent his new deputy after the worst-of-the-worst outlaws the Indian territory had to offer, with the orders not to burden the court by bringing them back for trial. Now, rumor has it that whenever outlaws gather around a campfire, the word is: "The only thing worse than standing before the Hanging Judge is hearing that Johnny Shooter is on your trail!"

Great Story, largely true
Revisado: 08-24-24
Despite the statement at the end of the book that "any representation of persons living or dead is unintended and coincidental....." this book is totally accurate about "Hanging Judge Parker" and Bass Reeves. Someone like Shooter must have also existed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, the story, the narration, and the ending are all excellent.

Calamity Jane meets the CIA

I got tired of the main female protagonist, what happened to her, what happens to her and her dismal future expectations. I started to fast forward her chapters and the book became much more listenable. Go to end of any chapter she is featured and the rewind 30 secs and you will have heard all you need.

I love all the characters in this book and the plot line. Dox carries this novel and his voicing and thoughts by BE is again superb. I find myself smiling of laughing whenever he is speaking. Then end of chapter 21 brings a great line:
"And there is somebody else we should call in case whoever we are up against is bigger and badder than we think",
"Yea, who is that?",
"Rain".

The story of what happened to Flashman, the caddish bully of Tom Brown's Schooldays, after he was expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s. This is the first of George Macdonald Fraser's hilarious satires starring Harry Paget Flashman.

I love English historical fiction. This is a ribald sortie into colonial years through the eyes of a decorated scoundrel. It is hilarious and consistently entertaining and oh so politically incorrect while being true to its time.

In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

This book is so slow and boring. What story line movement takes place is backwards through rear shadowing, retrospection, and flash backs. It is the literary equivalent of a four hour baseball game without the hot dogs.

Historia
Val Darrant was just four years old the snowy night his mother abandoned him. But instead of meeting a lonely death, he met Will Reilly - a gentleman, a gambler, and a worldly, self-taught scholar. For 10 years they each were all the family the other had, traveling from dusty American boomtowns to the glittering cities of Belle Époque Europe - until the day Reilly’s luck ran out in a roar of gunfire. But it wasn’t a gambling brawl or a pack of thieves that sealed Will’s fate. It was a far more complex story that Val would soon uncover.

Strong start devolves into social lectures
Revisado: 05-11-23
The premise was great and very imaginative. However, after early interesting action we have chapter after chapter filled with social lectures. This is why the book is 17 hours long with no ending. Presumably the book ends in volume two which I am no longer interested in reading. It could have been a great book if the author stuck to the action script and the literary concept of a beginning, middle and end. Instead we have beginning (clever, very good), lecture, lecture, lecture (boring, boring boring), no ending (frustrating).
