I enjoyed it. The narrator of Sapphire did such a great job. Most narrators of teens are not believable, but her parts of the story were my favorite. Not a huge thriller exactly, but it kept my interest. Will definitely listen to it again.

Historia
A young woman turns up at a police station. She has been kept prisoner in her own home. Abused and tortured, her every move watched, her every thought controlled. Now she's finally escaped. That's what she says. But when the police arrive at the address she's given them, her story doesn't seem to add up. Her husband is missing, but his phone and wallet are still in the house. She says she's the victim, but what if she's not? What if the stories she's telling aren't her stories at all....

Good story in general but beware violence and language
Revisado: 05-04-20
I wasn’t crazy about what I consider overly descriptive violence and language, although I understand the purpose. The storyline was good, but I think the point could have come across without that, hence the three stars. As for the narration, the American accent was off (and Americans don’t say “vit-amin”, we say “VITE-amin”) and I wasn’t crazy about sally, but otherwise it was well done. I’m not sure I want to listen again, but I appreciated the back and forth. I had suspicions that flipped a couple different times, and there was a thread that I thought could have been pulled a little more but it was generally interesting and kept my attention to the end.

Missing pieces
Revisado: 04-25-20
I didn’t at all enjoy the direction it took. I might have been okay with it if some details known by a certain character were explained or if the past and present had tied together better. But I’m left wondering how and why things were known and how on earth certain things were possible. She’s a great narrator and I enjoyed her first book, this one just didn’t hold up to my expectations.

Unexpected
Revisado: 04-23-20
This format is totally different from most audiobooks. It’s completely narrated in first person from different characters. At first I wasn’t sure about it but then as I listened to the different viewpoints and conflicting stories I really wanted to know how things went. It kept my interest for that reason. How reliable are the different characters? It’s maybe not for everyone, but it worked for me.

The performance was good, but the story was strange. Zero likable characters, which I think was the point. Just felt like a waste of time once it was all over.

Story, yes. Narration, no. Spoilers.
Revisado: 01-27-20
I really enjoyed the story. Go for the read, and the audiobook if you can deal with the narrators. Honestly, I’ve gotten in a really bad habit of listening to British audiobooks almost exclusively because some of these American voices are just awful to me. The clip from this one wasn’t terrible and the story sounded interesting so I went for it. I didn’t know I had the flu during the 10-hour workday I listened to this audiobook and the narration was the most painful part of my day. I’m sorry, but I hated all the narrators. Meredith was the least terrible, but they all enunciated things so strangely. Some of the other characters they voiced were good, actually, but the three main character voices drove me crazy, one in particular. SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!!! .......... During time away, when everything was supposed to be shiny and wonderful, the narrator turned her voice up at the end of sentences so that she sounded skeptical. I get the story aspect, but if that was intentional, it took away from the character experience. And chest and breast sounding like “chast” and “brast” was painful and that kind of thing happened repeatedly, from all three narrators. Maybe people sound like that, I don’t know, but I’ll have a hard time listening again.

Eh
Revisado: 10-17-19
Some of the character voices were absolutely grating. They were so exaggerated they sounded demonic, which is not what this book is about, so it didn’t really work for me. As for the book itself, it was a bit sad and although I liked the main character okay, I didn’t like anyone else at all, except maybe her dad. Overreactions abound. I didn’t hate the book, it had a solid start.

Frustrating
Revisado: 10-17-19
I can’t explain exactly what made me dislike this book. It was a little predictable with a decent twist, although there was one line of thought where I was disappointed the author didn’t go a different way. It was just a frustrating book. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention but a few times I didn’t know who I was listening to and the way people reacted to things was irritating. Worth a shot, just didn’t work for me.

Good stuff
Revisado: 09-25-19
Narration was just fantastic, switching between the different accents without being irritating. The story caught me and kept me. It took me a long time to figure it out, I definitely wasn’t expecting it, and mad me want to continue listening to hear how it resolved. Give it a go.

Just go with it
Revisado: 09-04-19
I went into this without paying too much attention to anything, from the title to the synopsis. I just liked the narrator’s voice, and I needed something to listen to at work that day. I was totally engrossed, and really enjoyed the way the book came together. Don’t overthink it and look for the way it’s going and you’ll probably enjoy it a lot more.
