I found it too shallow, and did not care for the narration. I thought it was an AI no emotion at all. do not recommend

Like it, however...
Revisado: 06-28-24
It is a neat premis, and a good story, but I really wish he would have used the phrase I exclaimed such as "Holmes!" I exclaimed... Instead of the phrase he used throughout the book which was "I ejaculated". While for the time period it may be linguistically correct the phrase "Holmes!' I ejaculated..." was as unexpected as it was off putting. Should this review be published, reading this review should help manage expectations.

No! Ruins EVERY other book in the timeline!!
Revisado: 05-08-23
Look, there was some shenanigans that I was willing to accept and move on with "editable" reality, but then HE WROTE HIMSELF INTO THE STORY?!?! NO. Made everything a waste of my time and money. The narrator is amazing and can do no wrong in my eyes but I am hoping to get my money back even if I can't scrub it from my brain

Revisado: 04-24-23
Not really sure what happened here. The story was all over the place, different characters, different timelines. I don't know. I can usually handle stories like that, it is more or less how I think. Terry Pratchett does a fabulous job at it but this one??? I gave up after 5 hours. I got through half of it? Maybe it goes over better in print?

I have read this before, and before and before. I really wished it was more about the what happened, but instead I got more "when there is an apocalypse, people spiral into depravity" Very disappointed.

I see what they were trying to do...
Revisado: 01-05-23
It is a pretty decent story, and I see what they were trying to do only since it is a story about a detective with a 20 year stick in their craw there was a serious issue that kept nagging me and nagging me and made it hard to enjoy.
Unfortunate.
Possible spoiler ALERT
The issue was that 20 years of sus behavior by people the detective knew since childhood, and she never asked why. Seriously? Some friken detective. Get off the case, stay away from the case blah blah but this dogged, hard-nosed detectictive - didn't go after why the sus behavior?

The mission story is good, the rest...
Revisado: 06-30-22
I like the team, their mission gives the right amount of moral quandary for them. I'm getting the next book to see how that bit ends, but I am getting really irritated with all the Halsey hate.
Possible spoiler warning-
Parangosky is running the op. Parangosky. The same woman that approved the Spartan II program, approved the details being stolen, approved the Spartan III program, funded it, made cheap, EXPENDABLE child soldiers. She did that.
Everyone is putting every bit of blame and hate on Halsey though. The whole team is super loyal to Parangosky, she is the leader and savior and somehow Halsey is the only evil monster. At least her soldiers were designed to be saviors and heroes, and ALIVE for the duration. I don't understand how the author can justify that level of hatred and hypocrisy. I hope there is something else to be revealed otherwise it is just a deeply disappointing secondary story

Come for the hate, stay for the hypocrisy!
Revisado: 06-30-22
Just in case someone has picked this up and has no idea about Halo I will give a warning for possible spoilers to come-
I like the general idea of this team and their mission ok. What made this book really hard to get through is all the Halsey hate. There are some other things that bothered me as well, timeline issues, etc, but seriously - every character in the book is demanding Halsey's head on a plate because she is a monster. I'm not saying that she isn't; but all of these people in this story work for the government, military, ONI, etc. They all know the process to get ANYTHING from their agency is difficult at best. The more expensive, the more difficult. So they should be more than aware that Halsey came to *someone with an idea of creating Spartans. That idea got approved by a bunch of people, the funding was given by a bunch of people, a fleet of people were hired to create the technology, another fleet of engineers, doctors, tecnichians, trainers, etm. were hired to work on the program, but everyone is only pissed at Halsey and they rant about her at nauseum. Very hard to finish this. The absurdity is real.
