Historia
After more than twenty years away from the law, Joe Hennessy is forced back into the courtroom. Trying to save his vineyard after years of drought, Hennessy returns to practice in Charleston, South Carolina–the city he walked away from after the murder of his ten-year-old son. When one of South Carolina's most powerful men is charged with possessing stolen artwork, Hennessy steps forward to defend him. But as Hennessy digs into the evidence, as he navigates the truth, he finds that the criminal charges are only the start of their problems…

A LOT of Christian Proselytizing
Revisado: 06-25-24
The story could have had merit but Christian sermonizing is interwoven in such a heavy handed and clumsy way it distracts from the story. The characters are one dimensional and uninteresting. I couldn't finish it. I wish these books came with an alert. Conversion tactics are rarely fashioned into an interesting story.

so disappointing
Revisado: 12-15-20
I like his first book and had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it really doesn't deliver. It should be named, How You Are Not Living from a Place of Surrender. The book is 90% description of the problem and 10% solution. Spoiler alert, the solution is to relax and let it go. There is no advice about how to do this, no steps, or practices, no details about the process. He equates it to quitting smoking. To quit smoking, just don't smoke, it's that simple. So to recover from your issues and live from a more peaceful and centered place, just let go of your issues.
Yes, he is annoying and spends far too much time giggling about your problems and telling you how sad he feels for you. But I could easily have tolerated that is he also offered anything helpful.
I wish I hadn't wasted the credit or the time.

Historia
Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed because when you're fat, to be noticed is to be judged. She is biding her time at a job answering fan mail for a popular teen girls' magazine until she can afford weight-loss surgery. But lately she is being followed by a girl in outlandish clothes and combat boots.

I got this book bc it was recommended by Jennifer Weiner, and I'm glad i did. this was entertaining, funny, enlightening and just the sort of escapist revenge fantasy i needed.

Historia
Mike Hayes fought his way out of a brutal childhood and into a quiet if lonely life - before he met Verity Metcalf. V taught him about love, and in return Mike has dedicated his life to making her happy. He’s found the perfect home, the perfect job; he’s sculpted himself into the physical ideal V has always wanted. He knows they’ll be blissfully happy together. It doesn’t matter that she hasn’t been returning his emails or phone calls. It doesn’t matter that she says she’s marrying Angus. It’s all just part of the secret game they used to play.

Good listen, disappointing ending
Revisado: 06-06-18
This is an interesting story, wonderful use of unreliable narrator, very demented main character. Then the ending is monumentally disappointing, so much so that I wish I hadn't bothered listening to it at all.

Historia
This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

unbearable

this book had some potential and parts were even funny and lively. unfortunately, the plodding prose and dreadful narration (think soap opera actress striving for earnestness) made it excruciating. i finished it and now resent the time.

Historia
No matter what was happening in Jennifer Weiner's life - whether good, bad, or very, very ugly - her mother, Fran, would say the same thing: It's all material. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author and "one of the biggest names in popular fiction" ( USA Today), beloved on Twitter and hailed as "an unlikely feminist enforcer" ( The New Yorker), takes the raw stuff of her personal life and spins it into a collection of personal essays as uproariously funny and heartfelt as the best of Tina Fey and Nora Ephron.

Historia
On a foggy summer night, 11 people - 10 privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter - depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: The plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work?

This is wonderful, sort of a thriller, sort of a good vs evil, a fascinating look at our current media culture, well written. I liked this way more than Noah Hawley's Good Father.

I usually listen to genre fiction bc it is usually more entertaining and read literary fiction, bc the slower pace allows for more contemplation. this book is smart and thought provoking and well written and also completely gripping. I wish I were I a book group so I could discuss it. I highly recommend it.
