Historia
In this major and wholly original contribution to military history, John Keegan reverses the usual convention of writing about war in terms of generals and nations in conflict, which tends to leave the common soldier as cipher. Instead, he focuses on what a set battle is like for the man in the thick of it.

Enlightenment
Revisado: 12-20-22
When the cavalry charged at Agincourt, I had to pause because it was so intense. Not because poetry (although Keegan was a hell of a writer) but because finally a battle made sense to me - after the painstaking factual scene setting - it became real. Nothing like the noisy, busy, confusing battle scenes of movies, or the sweeping summaries of history books. For the Somme I have no words. Wonderfully and richly narrated. If you must, skip the intro and conclusion chapters as the battles are far superior. But if you have the patience, the dry humour and insight will reward you.

Historia
It's 2010. Staggeringly successful and brilliant tech entrepreneur Bix Bouton is desperate for a new idea. He's 40, with four kids, and restless when he stumbles into a conversation with mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or 'externalising' memory. Within a decade, Bix's new technology, Own Your Unconscious—that allows you access to every memory you've ever had, and to share every memory in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes. But not everyone.

A novel that's novel
Revisado: 12-20-22
This book IS the candy house, "merely the portal", but "the thing that changes everything". On one level it's a bunch of good stories with linked characters, told in innovative ways: a good read. But there are so many more levels, making this that rare thing: a worthwhile read. I will never forget this book.
The excellent voice cast is worth the listen. For maximum value, read or listen to A Visit from the Goon Squad first. Be sure to view the slide show chapter (available on Jennifer Egan's website).

Historia
In July 2011, the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso was drifting through the treacherous Gulf of Aden when a crew of pirates attacked and set her ablaze in a devastating explosion. But when David Mockett, a maritime surveyor working for Lloyd’s of London, inspected the damaged vessel, he was left with more questions than answers. How had the pirates gotten aboard so easily? And if they wanted to steal the ship and bargain for its return, then why did they destroy it? The questions didn’t add up—and Mockett would never answer them.

A maritime story deserving to be told
Revisado: 07-18-22
Great gripping start. The story is padded out and the narrative drags somewhat. But this is a story that needs to be told and it's an injustice there isn't more to tell.

Historia
Napoleon inspires passionately held and often conflicting visions. Was he a godlike genius, a romantic avatar, a megalomaniac monster, a compulsive warmonger or just a nasty little dictator? Whilst he displayed elements of these traits at certain times, Napoleon was none of these things. He was a man and, as Adam Zamoyski presents him in this landmark biography, a rather ordinary one at that.

Better than Game of Thrones
Revisado: 06-19-22
Throughout this book I kept thinking it would make a brilliant series (although inevitably ruined by "dramatization"). Zamoyski fulfills his subtitle promise of making Napoleon human, as well as everyone around him. It's the best kind of informative well-written nonfiction - while raising the bar for the best kind of character-rich cohesive-plot fiction.

Historia
We think we know the story of Africa’s Great Lakes region. Following the Rwandan genocide, an idealistic group of young rebels overthrew the brutal regime in Kigali, ushering in an era of peace and stability that made Rwanda the donor darling of the West, winning comparisons with Switzerland and Singapore. But the truth was considerably more sinister.

Engrossing, relatable, shocking
Revisado: 06-19-22
Reading Do Not Disturb is to view Rwanda from a soaring eagle that can time travel. The narrative swoops between dates, people, places and events - zooming in for pixel clarity or hovering high with broad brushstrokes. It's a breathtaking way to weave a context-rich story. I'm left with a tapestry on which to place the surfacing news from the past and future decades, and to wonder what's really true.
