Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

New Number One

You know from the start of the book....the very first sentence that the lead character is going to die. you spend the last couple of chapters knowing How it's going to happen but when that scene finally plays out it's no less painful for knowing. This book made me cry, this book was so well crafted it evoked real tears, a feat no novel has been able to do and I've read plenty. Give him back. That is my Prayer for Owen.
I only buy physical books if I feel they deserve space on my book shelf. some of its occupants include Lord of the Rings, Paradise Lost, The Chronicles of Narnia, just to name a few. I just purchased a physical copy of this book to take up residence on my shelf and I feel as if I've missed greatness by not reading some of Irving's other works. You can bet your ass I'm going to start checking them out now.
Irving, in his interview at the end states that Johnny, if ever portrayed on stage should be more obviously homosexual in his affection towards Owen but I honestly did not get that impression. If anything I see him as Asexual, having Loved and touched a fragment of the Divine in his friendship with Owen he doesnt need the carnal aspect of Love. And sense you can obviously see the relationship between Owen and Hester I'd love to see how Irving explains and expands on that. What purpose does she serve in the Novel. You know there is one, you see how deeply she cares for Owen, how willing she is to go against her nature for him. Is she suppose to be some Mary Magdalene to his Christ like narrative? Just something I've been pondering.
I dont write reviews anymore...I find them drab and repetitive but this book became soul food, or a phrase I've become attached to....Word porn. So I had to write something, if you read no other book in your life this is the one to read but then again that's just my opinion.

Historia
Finally in control of the Ascendancy, Titus Quinn has styled himself Regent of the Entire. But his command is fragile. He rules an empire with a technology beyond human understanding; spies lurk in the ancient Magisterium; the Tarig overlords are hamstrung but still malevolent. Worse, his daughter Sen Ni opposes him for control, believing the Earth and its Rose universe must die to sustain the failing Entire.
