great humor, mostly accurate old man philosophy

early on I struggled with the overwhelming menu monologues, but a humorous story with some great family moments. the ending was a brutal, but justified?

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

Can't beat non-fiction history, especially WWII.

A very long and detail account of the war in North Africa. I had no concept that all this came before the Allied push in Europe. Awesome.

Historia
Ninety-nine elite American soldiers are trapped in the middle of a hostile city. As night falls, they are surrounded by thousands of enemy gunmen. Their wounded are bleeding to death. Their ammunition and supplies are dwindling. This is the story of how they got there - and how they fought their way out. Black Hawk Down drops you into a crowded marketplace in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia with the U.S. Special Forces and puts you in the middle of the most intense firelight American soldiers have fought since the Vietnam war.

Historia
Joe Owen tells it like it was in this evocative story of a marine rifle company in the uncertain, early days of the Korean War. His powerful description of close combat in the snow-covered mountains of the Chosin Reservoir and of the survival spirit of his Marines provide a gritty real-life view of frontline warfare. As a lieutenant who was with them from first muster in California, Owen was in a unique position to see the hastily assembled mix of some 200 regulars and raw reservists harden into a superb Marine rifle company. The action and narrative move fast as the company learns to fight under enemy fire, eat frozen rations, and keep pushing forward when its wounded and dead go down.

Historia
When the Marquis de Lafayette ran off to join the American Revolution against the explicit orders of the king of France, he was a strong-willed 19-year-old who had never set foot on a battlefield. Although the U.S. Congress granted him an honorary commission only out of respect for his title and wealth, Lafayette quickly earned the respect of his fellow officers with his bravery, devotion to the cause of liberty, and incredible drive. Playing a pivotal role in the Revolution, he led his men to victory at Yorktown.

Short, but very sweet!
Revisado: 07-31-17
A simple and chronological telling of Lafayette's life story. True to the times and well read, I thoroughly enjoyed this audible book. I plan to seek a more detailed account to satisfy my urge for detail. I highly recommend this book as your introduction to General Lafayette and his passion for liberty and love of America!

From the best-selling author of Assassination Vacation and Unfamiliar Fishes, a humorous account of the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette - the one Frenchman we could all agree on - and an insightful portrait of a nation's idealism and its reality. Lafayette in the Somewhat United States is a humorous and insightful portrait of the famed Frenchman, the impact he had on our young country, and his ongoing relationship with instrumental Americans of the time.

Quickly becomes an opinion piece
Revisado: 07-25-17
First mistake - narrated by the author with a poor voice and no talent with vocal arts.
Second mistake - perhaps more important, the well researched and often witty author quickly turns an amazing story of Lafayette into an opinion piece on a myriad of tppics important to the author but unrelated to the story of early America. Halfway through, it is impossible to continue. A big tease and a crying shame that the story is subjugated to the the author's soap box.
