Historia
Gibbs has become a popular blogger and frequent speaker at education conferences. In this series of frank reflections on an unlikely career, Gibbs contemplates what it means to be a good teacher, how great books can change lives (and how one particular book, The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, changed his), and why effective education is primarily concerned with the acquisition of virtue....How to Be Unlucky presents a one-of-a-kind case for ancient ways of thinking about teaching in our contemporary world.

Profound, Awakening Moral Reflection
Revisado: 06-04-22
Gibbs brings the wisdom of Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy into our modern American mileu. The book does tend to focus on moral confusions that are more typical of American Protestants than Catholics, but the whole thing is valuable for anyone seeking to live a virtuous and even a holy life.

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Interesting Topic Somewhat Superficially Presented
Revisado: 07-31-19
The sound and production quality of this piece were great, and the man and significance of his life were interesting, relevant, and justly deserving wider awareness. However, the piece did not convince me that anything of real significance directly came out of its main focus, John Hoboult's crusade for LOR. I did learn significant things about the nature and mission of NASA, its achievement of one of the greatest feats of engineering and human organization in all of history, and the current state of that mission.
