Spoiler alert (some mentions of events in both books are described in this review)

Hello all! There are few trilogies that I find the second book to be better than the first. It’s the heightened anticipation that builds my expectations to a height difficult to live up to. Yet Le Fey was one of the few.

The first book introduced us to a very human Morgan living in a life of abuse and powerlessness but with a image sense of strength that painted defiance throughout the canvas of her story. In this, I wish I could have been more like her. Her love affairs were short lived and disappointing both with her Gaul and her King Husband. It ended at a point when she still had not completely come into her magic or her strength and still attempted to get what she wanted through legal means. In other words, defiant or not she tried to play by the rules.

The Morgan in the second book is older but just as flawed. Her choices lead to the removal of not one but two sons from her raising. (Sorry about that spoiler if you haven’t yet read it.) my human heart broke for Morgan.

But it is the endurance and human strength, the ability to become what others need her to be, the lesson of what it takes to truly overcome….these things change the character and this new Morgan is just utterly fascinating. You can’t stop reading.

Just an overall fantastic book. I am about to read both books all over again. They are just that good.

The author is great and Jessie was an awesome reader. This narration followed me everywhere for two days. Those are the best!

I’ve always loved history but I’ve struggled to find time to watch documentaries or read texts on the subject. I came across the great courses through my audible plus account and thought I’d try it.

I AM IN LOVE! Garland puts you at the center of ancient civilizations, asking you to imagine yourself as a Roman housewife or Greek soldier- he explains what type of events influenced average citizens, what options were open to them and why they would have had values different to our own. This took me back to the days of playing pretend in the school yard with a bunch of my friends. For a moment, I was a child again, imaging the world in a different way and playing the part…for a little while at least. The best part is… audible narration makes playing pretend completely portable. As I’m driving through the school pickup line, I am mentally walking through a Roman villa or seeing the temple of Venus. Pretty cool, right?

Margaret is such a beautiful writer. The sadness used to bring two lost souls together. Love it!!
