There are no “rich people”

To hear about Jeremy for the first time in 2024 is to set him apart as an “alien“ of absurd success. His unapologetic and even abrasive communication style might tempt you to put him in a box as a jerk “rich guy” that you don’t have anything in common with. If you maybe only read one article about him or heard him talk for a minute or two you could feel comfortable keeping him in that box. But not after reading this book. Not only did it shatter by perception of this guy I felt so different from and now can relate to significantly, it helped me see how often I put other people in boxes that I should instead continue to question, myself included. Jeremy is financially wealthy, but he is also spiritually, psychologically, and relationally well off as well. But he’s been to the other side of the spectrum in all of those areas at different parts of his life, and none of those waypoints, then, or now, define him. They don’t define me either, or you, or anyone.

There are no “rich people”… Just people. I hope I can take that into every interaction I have for the rest of my life. And this book has helped provide a reference point for me to do just that.

Some of the murder scenes are extremely well done… That is to say they made me need to put the book down I was so grossed out. Definitely thought I had it figured out a couple times and definitely did not have it figured out. Wonderful writer, fantastic book.

I can’t add much more than those two words. They do a little explanation from time to time that gets a little backstory that I’ve never heard before in an audiobook and I like that very much. But overall this guy is just…yeah...Holy shit.

The first workaholic book I've read, and holy sh*t

As a physician working with dying patients, I sometimes get stressed out, anxious, etc. But my bigger reason for reading this book was knowing that I'm a workaholic. I've never read a book by workaholic, about workaholism, etc. This just floored me. Maybe more a reflection of my lack of exposure to literature on the topic then on the groundbreaking nature of the book, but I was still blown away. I'm no stranger to self-help literature having read probably more than 100 books in the genre, which was one of the reasons I put off reading this book for so long. I did not expect to find anything new in it. To be fair, there are some classic suggestions in here that were not new, but the premise of the book "go play" was presented an engaging and convincing way and the action items were clear and straightforward. It's only 2 1/2 hours, but I stopped and bookmarked at least five different spots in the book and said out loud "holy shit, this is me, I need to do __suggestion from the book___".

My audible library is 200+ books and this is the worst narrator I've heard. Also the recording has two total errors in it (a sneeze or something and a complete repetition of a sentence). First time I've ever heard either...and this is only 1.5 hrs long. Content isn't terrible, stays organized with the book. Listened to this before reading the book to get a sense of the structure to come, so can't say if it's a well done summary of the book or not.

It's a memoir first, an informational book second

This was a good memoir about a very difficult time in her life. It was well written and thoughtful, but as memoirs often are it was much more free-flowing than I expected. I thought this would be much more similar to Angela Duckworth's "Grit". Organized and informational with a narrative to tie things together a little bit more. It was much more focused on her healing process than on an organized set of principles to help others do the same (although these principles certainly were there). I have a newfound respect for Cheryl Sandberg, and I wish her and all of her efforts (along with Adam Grant's, both of whose books I've read and thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from) the best. I just don't think what was advertised was delivered to the level I thought it would be.

The above title is the first thing I said when I finish the book. A few hours later I reflected on the book and said the same thing out loud, only later realizing that that's exactly what I said before. I laughed many times. I cried a couple times. I was riveted the whole time. There is not a bad section of this entire book. I've never seen a book with more than 10,000 ratings and an average rating of 4.9. I read it for that reason alone (I'm not necessarily fan of Trevor Noah… before this book, that is). But it certainly deserves every single one of those points. I did not think I could read a memoir better than Amy Schumer's. This one certainly is in the same ballpark, and may actually be better, albeit a little less funny.

Phil Knight is so genuine in these pages. So humble. So grounded. What a squared away, all American, yet certainly human individual. Understanding how close he was to dying for almost a decade gives me hope and perspective that my own pursuits (one eight years in the making, and yet to turn a profit) are not necessarily doomed, and that the real gift of journeys like these is the journey itself (which is been unspeakably rewarding).

Such a beautifully painted picture in every scene. When the book was over I wanted to cry, just because being that immersed felt so good. It makes me want to more deeply commit to the one or two rewarding hobbies I have very inconsistently participated in in my life.

I'm a huge fan of the war of art and turning pro. I have a copy of each sitting on my desk at all times. This book worked in a similar vein but with more thorough explanations and deeper explorations of each concept. Very inspirational, and helped in explaining what "being creative" truly means… And ultimately in helping me get past the barriers that exist in my mind and heart to being creative myself.
