Historia
Melissa Dilkes Pateras is the most competent housekeeper, DIY-project master, and home repair genius that you’ve ever fantasized about becoming. When she followed her kids on to TikTok, she discovered a community hungry for her approachable, tongue-in-cheek advice on everything from balls—dryer balls, that is—to why color-coded closets are a spiritual experience. She doesn’t expect you to know what you were never taught, and she doesn’t care about transforming your home into a minimal, beige Instagram post; she simply wants to help make your life easier.

Couldn't get past the judgmental introduction
Revisado: 09-07-24
I'm not even kidding. I was so sad to start listening to the book only to hear so much judgment from someone I really liked prior to this.
The author is talking about those cheesy signs people have in their homes, and starts talking sh!t about the one that says "Please excuse the mess, we're making memories." She says "I hate that sign. It's the worst quote ever. 'Please excuse the mess, we're making memories?' No you're not, at least not good ones. You're living in chaos and those are the memories you're making. I hate the idea that you can't be making memories while also keeping a neat home."
I quit listening right there. I hate the idea that anything other than her definition of neat and tidy is considered by her to be "chaos." I've followed this writer for a few years now, and I was SHOCKED at how judgmental that is. For every child she claims is living in "chaos," there are kids who are living in "neat" homes and the parents are more obsessed with keeping things clean than being there for their kid. That doesn't mean I think that everyone who keeps a neat home is that way.
Someone living in a home that isn't perfectly neat and clean every second isn't "chaos" and I'm sad that this author decided to start her book this way.
I'm really sad that this is how she decided to start her book. So judgmental and just flat inaccurate.
Melissa, people can have a little bit of mess and not have it be "chaos" and creating "bad memories."

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

I tried to get through the book bc I really liked the movie, but I can’t make it through. It’s dreadful as a book. At least the movie had lovely shots to appreciate. This is just…. Tedious.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It gave me a lot to think about and made me curious.
It also made me ugly cry a few times, so keep that in mind when deciding to listen to it at the gym or grocery store. 😂

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Hard but good
Revisado: 12-13-22
I grew up with a mom like Jenette’s. The specifics are different, of course, but the overtones are the same.
It was a hard listen for that reason. Maybe it made everyone uncomfortable, maybe it was just me, idk. But it wasn’t a happy go lucky listen for me.
That’s not to say it was bad. It was not. I couldn’t stop listening. The author is talented, and I’m grateful she shared her story. Her courage is beautiful, and I find myself wishing I could tell her that I get it. I really, really do.

Gobsmacking
Revisado: 01-21-20
A lot of this has already been reported and most of us who have kept up won't be surprised by much of it.
It's still absolutely gobsmacking to hear it all laid out like this again, especially as his impeachment trial begins.
Whether you love or loathe him, I recommend this book to every American. You deserve to know what is going on in OUR House. If you can listen to it all and still defend this disaster of an administration and the traitor leading it, I truly don't know what to tell you.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

This book is riveting. It's full of well sourced reporting that should have come out long before it did. Kudos to Farrow for his persistence and tenacity.
I wasn't a huge fan of the voices he chose to use to represent other people, but I did laugh at how he portrayed his fiance, Jon Lovett. :) Congrats on your engagement, guys! May you know a long, loving life together.

When Andrew Rannells left Nebraska for New York City in 1997, he, like many young hopefuls, saw the city as a chance to break free. To start over. To transform the fiercely ambitious but sexually confused teenager he saw in the mirror into the Broadway leading man of his dreams. In Too Much Is Not Enough, Rannells takes us on the journey of a 20-something hungry to experience everything New York has to offer: new friends, wild nights, great art, standing ovations.

I really didn't enjoy this book. It's not put together well. It's not narrated well. ("Tobias Funk" is what pushed me right over the edge. Is it that hard to google a name to make sure you have it right?)
It's long. It's negative in so many places. It's booooooooooring.
It just wasn't an interesting or fun book. I wish I had skipped it.

Plus, it features exclusive bonus audio of young Neil delivering an adorable speech! That’s audio you won’t hear in any version of this book other than the audiobook!

Let Me Start By Saying...
Revisado: 12-02-14
What made the experience of listening to Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography the most enjoyable?
Neil's delivery of the material was perfect, of course.
What other book might you compare Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography to and why?
I've been listening to a lot of celeb bios and I'd say Nick Offerman, believe it or not. Not exactly, as Nick didn't follow the CYOA style, but still similar in content.
What about Neil Patrick Harris’s performance did you like?
He's very easy to listen to. There's enough animation in his voice to be interesting and inviting, but not so much as to be annoying or take attention away from the story. Neil just has great timing and inflection.
Any additional comments?
As much as I loved it (and I do love it), the Choose Your Own Adventure aspect makes the audiobook hard to follow. I love the idea and will probably buy an actual copy of the book, but it just struggles as an audiobook. Neil's performance makes up for it, but you can expect at least a few, "Wait, what?" moments.

Growing up in a Philadelphia suburb in the 1970s was an easy life. Well, easy as long as you didn't have dyslexia or ADD, or were a Jew. And once you added gay into the mix, life became more difficult. So Todd Glass decided to hide the gay part, no matter how comic, tragic, or comically tragic the results. Now, Todd has written an open, honest, and hilarious memoir in an effort to help everyone - young and old, gay and straight - breathe a little more freely.

Worth It
Revisado: 11-17-14
Where does The Todd Glass Situation rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's okay. I enjoyed a lot of the story, but the ghostwriter + someone else narrating it makes it harder to really connect it to Todd. It just feels a little... removed. But I still enjoyed it.
Any additional comments?
Overall, enjoyable, but it's only about a 3.5 on a 5 point scale.
