I am haunted by Addie LaRue
Revisado: 10-17-20
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a hurricane of emotions. There are periods of despair and pure heartache, followed by moments of pure joy. This novel is more than just a story, it will leave a mark on your soul that won’t ever leave. Schwab has created characters that you want to protect with your very being. Julia Whelan was the perfect voice to bring Addie LaRue to life.

Historia
It’s 1940, and Sarah Goldstein is hiding in plain sight as Ursula Haller, the Shirley Temple of Nazi high society. She helps the resistance by spying on Nazi generals at cocktail parties in Berlin, but she yearns to do more. Then the spy she works for, the Captain, gets word of a German doctor who’s gone rogue in Central Africa. Rumors say the doctor is experimenting with a weapon of germ warfare so deadly it could wipe out entire cities. It’s up to the Captain and Sarah to reach the doctor and seize this weapon - known as “the Bleeding” - before the Nazis can use it.

The story is solid and brilliant. My only complaint is that some of the narrator’s accents are a bit painful to listen to.

Audie Award, Humor, 2016. In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Daring
Revisado: 10-06-15
What did you like best about this story?
There's a unique balance to essays included. Some will have you in tears because you're laughing. (Man on the plane, I'm talking about you and your porn.) Others will have you wanting to give her a hug and wanting to send her a taxidermist Chipmunk named Piper, who is beach ware ready.
What does Jenny Lawson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Jenny Lawson is brutally honest when talking about her depression and anxieties. Never have I heard it described so perfectly. It takes an extreme amount of effort to shake off the stigma of mental illness and shout it out to the world, to not be ashamed, and to be simply you.

Historia
From Edgar-nominated author Lyndsay Faye comes the next book in what Gillian Flynn calls, "a brilliant new mystery series." Six months after the formation of the NYPD, its most reluctant and talented officer, Timothy Wilde, thinks himself well versed in his city's dark practices - until he learns of the gruesome underworld of lies and corruption ruled by the "blackbirders," who snatch free Northerners of color from their homes, masquerade them as slaves, and sell them South to toil as plantation property. The abolitionist Timothy is horrified by these traders in human flesh.

Would you consider the audio edition of Seven for a Secret to be better than the print version?

It's the Post War Generation Drowning Their Demons
Revisado: 08-13-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've recommended it to anyone who is breathing.
What other book might you compare The Other Daughter to and why?
Movie wise, it's a lot like Miss Pettigrew Lives for a day and My Fair Lady with a splash of The Great Gatsby.
Any additional comments?
What starts out as a novel, about a woman going in search of a father whom she believed to be dead, turns into a plot ripened with revenge. Lauren Willig shows how feelings of despair and loneliness can turn towards revenge, and how revenge can unwittingly turns innocents into victims. The Other Daughter is witty, and has the sparring dialogue of Cary Grant Rosalind Russel. Rachel's journey from lowly nanny to socialite will grip you from that very first page.

A Thrilling Conclusion
Revisado: 07-31-15
What does Lauren Fortgang bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voice oddly reminds me of Mia from the Princess Diaries.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Two come to mind, but spoilers and all. You'll you what they are as soon as you get to them. *hands over a box of tissues*
Any additional comments?
I apologize for the randomness.
First off, The Darkling. I kept waiting for him to play a bigger role. I didn't really feel his presence until that showdown between him and Nikolai. The Darkling faded away like smoke. You still heard of battles and skirmishes, but nothing really life altering. I didn't even feel all that bad at the end, which makes me wonder about all this Team Darkling. He could have been so much more. I kept waiting for that redemption moment, and without spoiling, I didn't really feel it there at the end.
Nikolai. The world needs more Nikolai adventures, I don't care if it's as him as a pirate... I mean privateer, him as the you know what, or as the new king. I refuse to let him go.
What kept me reading, was the team dynamics. Zoya, Genya, David, Mal, Alina, Misha, Toyla, Bagra, etc was electric, heartbreaking, humorous, and are basically people whom I wouldn't think twice about hanging out with. The characters weren't typed casted into roles, they were alive.
Oncat. We all need an Oncat in our lives.
The ending is that warm sweater and cup of hot chocolate on after trudging in three feet of snow to get your mail. It's sweet, simple, and fitting for the main characters.

Historia
A brilliant literary debut, inspired by a true story: the final days of a young woman accused of murder in Iceland in 1829. Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tóti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her.

What do you do while you await execution?
Revisado: 07-26-15
What did you like best about this story?
Which character – as performed by Morven Christie – was your favorite?
Morven Christie brought so much emotion into bringing Agnes to life. She made you feel the despair and utter hopeless as the months pass towards Agnes's execution. You became Agnes and you feel the anxiety build as the winter months come.
Any additional comments?
Hannah Kent's research into Icelandic culture, is tangible in the words she has written; from the superstitions, prison life, community life, to abandoned orphans, and to the dynamics in which servants of that time period lived, will make the outcome of the novel even more poignant.

Fun Summer Read
Revisado: 07-15-15
What did you like best about Siege and Storm? What did you like least?
Siege and Storm begins with Mal and Alina on the run. Bardugo slips you into the characters, you feel as if you too are being hunted by the Darkling. The middle flounders and you find yourself lost in the drama between Mal and Alina, and the focus on the war is set to the side. Yet, the addition of Tolya, Tamar, and Sturmhond bring Alina a support system she was lacking in the first installment. The zealots help tie the series into our own world, and what we've seen in our own pasts (especially during medieval times), and even to cult followers. This installment is darker than the first, it hovers on the edges of the plot when Alina isn't facing the Darkling.
Side Notes:
STURMHOND. WE NEED MORE.
I was saddened by the lack of the Darkling.
Genya... tears.
David... OhtotheMGEE... I won't spoil anything but that ending.

the path to hell is paved in good intentions
Revisado: 06-23-15
Would you listen to This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein again? Why?
This Dark Endeavor captures the bond between siblings with depth and accuracy; between the rivalry, the love, the adventures they embark upon, and the need to just stab your sibling with a foil, kept me listening. Even when the pendulum swings downward in Victor and Konrad's relationship, their loyalty to each other never falters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Elizabeth is a wonderful balance of femininity and just being one of the boys. She can be wild as any wolf, yet remain a believable character. She has weakness and isn't afraid to show it. But seriously, she fended off a vulture with her teeth. Do not mess with her.
What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His performance as Victor and Konrad during their arguments is lively and engaging. It is something you'd miss by reading.
