Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

Your music was the soundtrack to some of the most Epic adventures and best friendships of my life that endure to this day. Hearing your story gives an appreciable backdrop to the dedication (and some would say sacrafices) of laying your soul into your craft.

Historia
Since it was first published in 2005, Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near and its vision of the future have been influential in spawning a worldwide movement with millions of followers, hundreds of books, major films, and thousands of articles. During the succeeding decade, many of Kurzweil's predictions about technological advancements have been borne out, and their viability has become familiar to the public through such now commonplace concepts. In this entirely new book Ray Kurzweil brings a fresh perspective to advances in the singularity.

Cause for optimism and the need for Democracy.
Revisado: 08-05-24
Found this amazing and unbelievable. The transformative power of these technologies on the human species highlights the need for Democracy. The content is astounding if only a fraction of these predictions come to fruition. The Statistics were a bit much to take in as a listen (as opposed to a read) for me personally, and the narration was a little droning, but the content is a listen everyone should hear and understand.

Must Read.
Revisado: 01-13-24
This story seemed like more of a history lesson, and a must read for any "disgruntled" American. My thoughts are sadly that the fringes of our current political divide in America that need this lecture have no idea what has gone on outside their bubble or the ramifications of our past exploitation of others on the future. I liked that there was hope given at the end, but I am doubtful that the powerful leaders of governments and the Corporatocracy around the globe will allow much change given the status quo citizens are willing to endure.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Master class in creativity.
Revisado: 07-05-23
Obviously, an expert in his field, a spiritually led master class not only in creativity but in life. Working in healthcare and not being artistically inclined, I feel like whatever creativity I had has been stripped from me by the industrialized HealthCorp complex. An avid fan of music, I appreciate how the insight and analysis of the creative process apply to life in general as our day-to-day lives are creation. Thought provoking, grounded, and insightful. Thank you for sharing.

Pioneers of Britain's nascent rock and metal scene back in the late 1970s, Iron Maiden smashed its way to the top, thanks in no small part to the high-octane performances, operatic singing style, and stage presence of its second but twice-longest-serving lead singer, Bruce Dickinson. As Iron Maiden's front man - first from 1981 to 1993 and then from 1999 to the present - Dickinson has been, and remains, a man of legend.

Revisado: 11-21-22
Wonderful listen of the life and career of a lyrical and vocal powerhouse. I had the pleasure of seeing Iron Maiden a couple weeks before listening to this and Bruce (as always) did not dissapoint in his performance. This book only solidifies that no matter what (career or hobby) he is pursuing he does so with intense passion and without excuses or regret. Thanks for sharing years of great music, energetic performances, and now the story of how they all tie together with your fans.

Historia
When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Little did he know that within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the frontman of the Screaming Trees, and then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the forefront of popular music.

Conflicted.
Revisado: 03-26-22
I want to enjoy this book. I imagine it was hard for Mr. Lanegan to have written, let alone performed this audio title, yet I also imagine it was maybe a catharsis for him, or possibly just a way to earn some money based on it's content. The tortured story of his life is hard to stomach as a music fan who can not envision being a creative artist such as himself, leaving timeless pieces of art to carry on a legacy long after my physical demise (let alone that he did so in such agony...indicating to this reader a natural talent that was much greater than he was able to share fully). There is such an honesty in his telling his story that there seems an impossibility that he not have had a truly great spirit / soul (or whatever you prefer). There is a definite contrition for his misdeeds, and a truly gracious thankfulness for those loyal in his life. Confused by the ending that seemed abrupt and the span of time that seemed long for the ending and the release of the book that left me wanting to hear more good things that he found in those later years of sobriety. While it's content was interesting, some of the stories enlightening and performed humorously, I can't help but walk away feeling stunned and sad, however; somewhat hopeful in the resiliency of human spirit. Rest in peace, and thank you for the great art you left for us to enjoy.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Nicely intertwined.
Revisado: 11-17-21
I found the multiple angles (biological, societal, cultural, agricultural, physiological/psychological, and scientific) of history when told together by the author to give interesting perspectives on where we've been, how we got here, and where we are going as a species. Most interestingly were all the mishaps and ignorance of consequence our actions as conscious beings produced(es) as we stumble thru the chaos of nature.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

Comprehensive History
Revisado: 06-22-21
This is a very intriguing, comprehensive, and thoroughly told history of the "war on drugs" to present day (and beyond), Told from the standpoints of stories of those involved the author gave me insights, perceptions, and statistical insights that I hadn't thought of before and, in my mind, made a strong case for legalization in the "western world". A lot of the material was known such as the disproportionate affect on minorities, the brutal violence and greed of the drug cartel(s), and the pain addiction(s) cause for not only the addicted but their loved ones. The most interesting portion of the book for me came from chapter 15 on in the details of what other countries in the industrialized world have done. Vancouver, U.K., Sweeden, and Portugal while not perfect systems, have a lot to teach the U.S. in particular about how to empathize with this patient population and control this problem. While I tend to believe it's just incompetence run amok, it seems like such a simple solution one has to question if our politicians really want the problem to be acted on.

Historia
Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist. This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution.

Well said.
Revisado: 09-20-20
Seth gives hope that our country can put aside it's divisive political discord and come together to do right by all its people. The history of right wing Christian Nationalism shows us that oppression does not win out over inclusion, and this book demonstrates that rational, logical, and reasonable debate can steer our ship straight. It is helpful that this comes in such an intellectual and thoughtful manner from an author well versed in each side of the debate.

A great story of the experiences and communities that led this creative genius to...well...tell great stories. I am a biased fan of Mr. Keenan's works, but I didn't get there by chance. I have a feeling if you inquire of his story here you will be a fan too if you aren't already.
