Historia
On the heels of her triumphant How to Be a Victorian, Ruth Goodman travels even further back in English history to the era closest to her heart, the dramatic period from the crowning of Henry VII to the death of Elizabeth I. Drawing on her own adventures living in re-created Tudor conditions, Goodman serves as our intrepid guide to 16th-century living. Proceeding from daybreak to bedtime, this charming, illustrative work celebrates the ordinary lives of those who labored through the era.

Great book — confused by ending
Revisado: 05-30-20
The author’s experience with Tudor period practices — from knotting silk braid to making ale — made this book great fun. I was enjoying it, and coming to the end of the day with sleep, when the book seemed to suddenly end. Did they run out of studio time or something? Weird. But the rest of it is great!

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Your super-smart best friend
Revisado: 11-03-19
Mike Duncan first had me at the History of Rome podcast. The Storm Before the Storm adds fascinating details to one of many eras in Roman history covered there. As always, in his recounting, he manages to combine scholarly detail with humor— or tragedy, as warranted. It is like sitting down with a super smart, engaging friend over many cups of coffee, to learn about Roman history. He makes clear the difference between speculation and fact, and is able to offer knowledge-based insights to the context in which events are occurring.
Can’t wait to see what Mike Duncan does next!

Historia
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father's inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty - until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk - grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh - Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered.

Magical!
Revisado: 04-17-19
So creative. This story follows the rules of a fairytale, yet manages to weave a deep tale around the main characters. The surprising turns and clever solutions help develop the characters and lead you through an absolutely magical story. The narration is superb in bringing this story to life.
