I’ve always wanted to know more about Market Garden. This told me a lot though it would have been more understandable with maps. I’ll definitely listen again and have maps handy next time

Historia
When Peter Canning started work as a paramedic on the streets of Hartford, Connecticut, 25 years ago, he believed drug users were victims only of their own character flaws. Although he took care of them, he did not care for them. But as the overdoses escalated, Canning began asking his patients how they had gotten started on their perilous journeys. And while no two tales were the same, their heartrending similarities changed Canning's view and moved him to educate himself about the science of addiction.

Narrator took a little getting used to but after a few chapters his cadence felt normal. The book itself was enlightening and touching. I won’t look at addicts the same as I have in the past. Thank you for this book.

Historia
Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

Such a lot of truth in a very short production. I’m not a gun person at all but I have such empathy for these folks. So príveles he’d to hear this heart wrenching story. I wish them both all happiness

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

I feel that I’m more well versed in this subject than I was before listening and it was engrossing enough that I listened to the whole course in two days. I’d highly recommend this course for anyone looking for a basic understanding of the plague

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

The way that Barbara Kingsolver puts sentences, then paragraphs and finally her story together is remarkable. Such a joy to listen to. I'll definitely go back to this one. It might be my favorite book of the year. Maybe of the decade.

Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Revisado: 02-06-23
I don't listen to a lot of westerns, especially fiction, but when I do they are often written by Larry McMurtry. I've listened to "Lonesome Dove" four or five times over the years. This is McMurtry at his best. You can't help but fall in love with the characters and wish for the best for all of them (especially Gus!) McMurtry's habit of taking us into the minds of his characters is sublime. If this book has somehow escaped you to this point put your hat on and saddle up. It's time to meet the Hat Creek outfit.

Revisado: 02-06-23
I love really good historical fiction. It doesn't get better than this. I've read quite a few of Ken Follet's other books but this is by far his best in my humble opinion. I've listened to it probably five times in the last 25 years and just finished it again. If you haven't indulged yet do give it a try. It may become for you, as it has for me, a treat to savor over and over again.

If you want more insight into Ebola........
Revisado: 02-06-23
If you want more insight into Ebola this is the second best place to start. I read "The Hot Zone" many years ago (and re read it during the pandemic) This book was heavier on personal stories from various Ebola outbreaks but also gave a lot of technical info. one of the things I appreciated was an inside view of some of the workings of the NIH and Doctors Without Boarders and other government (and private) agencies.
The narrator was good; no complaints.

The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater. The last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, it devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come.
