must read for ww2 aviation enthusiasts
Revisado: 03-20-25
i wasn't sure when I bought it if it was for me. But I am running out of ww2 aviation audio books, so I took a chance. So glad I did. Thisbook shows it from the civilian side, but mostly from.the luftwaffe point of view. Both strategy and the view from the cockpit are covered and the author ties it into known allied strategies like big week

Historia
NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it. But as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

i tried this book based soley on the massive number of 5 star reviews. I rarely read fiction, so this way off the beaten path for me. the science is understandable. but what makes this book special is connection between human and alien. spectacular narration too.

Historia
The Watchmaker’s Daughter is one of the greatest stories of World War II that listeners haven’t heard: the remarkable and inspiring life story of Corrie ten Boom—a groundbreaking, female Dutch watchmaker, whose family unselfishly transformed their house into a hiding place straight out of a spy novel to shelter Jews and refugees from the Nazis during Gestapo raids. Even though the Nazis knew what the ten Booms were up to, they were never able to find those sheltered within the house when they raided it.

Could Not Finish It
Revisado: 06-01-24
This is not like Princess Spy at all. It started off interesting with explanations of how the family's faith was the basis for their actions. But about halfway through it was more like a bible study lesson, with quote after quote--often making the same point over and over. By chapter 11 it read more like an evangelical speech aimed at the reader. The story just stopped dead and a long bible verse review and prayer recitation took place. While I would have liked to see how it ended, its too hard in audio format to skip ahead to the resumption of the story. Nof for me.

Historia
By June 1941, Germany's war machine looked to be unstoppable. The Nazi blitzkrieg had taken Poland, France, and Holland with shocking speed. The Luftwaffe had bombed London, while German U-boats wrought havoc on Allied shipping on the Atlantic. And yet, as James Holland shows at the start of The Allies Strike Back, 1941-1943 - the second volume in his magisterial narrative of World War II in the West - cracks were already appearing in Germany's apparent invincibility.

Historia
Daisy Wilder prefers the company of horses to people, bare feet and salt water to high heels and society parties. Then, in the dizzying aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Daisy enlists in a top secret program, replacing male soldiers in a war zone for the first time. Under fear of imminent invasion, the WARDs guide pilots into blacked-out airstrips and track unidentified planes across Pacific skies. But not everyone thinks the women are up to the job, and the new recruits must rise above and work side by side despite the resistance and heartache they meet along the way.

Not much history in this one
Revisado: 01-16-24
i was expecting this to be centered around ww2 radar. But thats just a very minor sideline. This is basically a generic and very predictable love story. The Code Breakers Secret had more ww2 history and was way less contrived. The only reason i listened to the whole thing was the performance. back to nonfiction for me.

great classic account of dday. No WW2 book collection is complete without it. Smartly paced, and very familiar due to the movie. Performance is somewhat dry and monotone though.

Historia
The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater. The last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, it devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come.

do not miss this one
Revisado: 07-18-23
im not sure I would have bought this one if i knew howling ago it was written, and that would've been my loss. This is written with bits and snatches of many of the civilians, military leaders and t every day people woven in and out of the story. The pure evil, fear, hate, greed, are there to be seen. The love of a zoo keeper for his doomed animals, was so touching and disturbing. It is less about the triumph of good over evil--and more about the scale of suffering. The ability for so many to deny the reality of the situation is brought home. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
Twenty-five years after her passing, Audrey Hepburn remains the most beloved of all Hollywood stars, known as much for her role as UNICEF ambassador as for films like Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Several biographies have chronicled her stardom, but none has covered her intense experiences through five years of Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. According to her son, Luca Dotti, "The war made my mother who she was."

Revisado: 01-12-23
In the and this was just An adoration To Audrey Hepburn. If you're someone interested in World War II history and thought this would be about the resistance, it is not. If you thought this was going to be about the war experience for a child, it isn't that either. It's really is one big long love letter to Audrey Hepburn. 2 stars is generous. Much better is German Boy Wolfgang Samuel
