I had high hopes for this book. But I never connected with the characters. It was a struggle for me to listen even though the narration was good. The best chapter for me was the epilogue chapter not because it was last but because of its over all condensation of the point of the book.

As I started this book it was a real slog to keep going. The plot seemed centered on one person but switched to another that became the primary protagonist of the book. I almost think the author intended to tell another story but changed their mind and basically gave the reader the equivalent of a rough first draft that was thrown away. When the action picks up somewhere around the middle of the book the author finally begins to tell an interesting tale.

I thought I knew something about Black History but I have learned that there was so much more and what I did know was very superficial. The author covers a story that’s leaves one flummoxed by the abuses of basic humanity. The author uses humor that is sarcastic and pointed that does raise a smile even though the narrative evokes no room for humor in my view. Overall I enjoyed the book in spite of the anger that often welled up during the reading.

While the story started a bit slow it picks up to a very engrossing tale. The clear use of code-switching throughout the book establishes James identity and the code of the enslaved. The pace and tenor is good. A very satisfying read

A short book to outline the Mesozoic era of life on Earth. I found it to be interesting and informative. The reader was adept at the scientific names which helped to accelerate the narrative. The author is clearly authoritative and invested in the content. Overall a satisfying journey.

An very interesting book. Story of racial tensions with the viewpoint of the oppressed. A touching story that shifts from Jewish to Black and back with sympathy and integrity. We might wish that the era and situations of this story are past but unfortunately not completely true.

An interesting book. Easy to read and reminded me a lot of Ulysses by James Joyce in terms of the main character focus and scenes in the narrative. A tale of transition.

I enjoyed this book very much. Its scientific background was very interesting and the description of the mental gyrations that allowed the story to progress were entertaining.

I found this book to be an oppressive read. The interaction between the characters was churlish. The tones of pedofilia were bothersome. The sexual descriptions were prurient and appealing to someone with the maturity of a teenage boy. There was a thin plot. The last two chapters were the most readable and engaging of the entire book. This book was obviously not my cup of tea and I will be very cautious about reading more of this author’s work.

Vignettes of extinction

As a biologist I found this book very interesting and as a person I found the stories to be almost depressing in their similarities. There are ten tales of extinction and each story follows a pattern of basic biology, population declines, and finally what went wrong. There is the unquestionable presence of human activity as an agent in all of these stories but there is a uniqueness to each one. This book should be a wake-up call for paying attention to losses in Earth’s diversity which I think will mostly fall of deaf ears in todays social climate.
