Reading this book I asked myself why did this story have to be told? Still don’t have the answer. A lot of potential but fell far short.

This very well written and expertly narrated. I am deeply concerned about the writer. How could anyone write this stuff? I had no idea what I was in for and didn't want anything to do with this book. Yet I had to know what happened. I confess I did skip some of the more disturbing chapters.

She is funny and wise and has answers to questions I didn't even know to ask. Thank you Pema. Especially on the teachings of compassion

Maybe I'm spoiled by listening too often to Brenè I know she probably doesn't have time for her own narration. However, she has a light hearted can dance a smile in her voice and a comforting twang that endears you tithe topic and writing. Everyone should read or listen to this book. I have attended the Daring Greatly workshop and it changed my life. This narrato sounded too much like a researcher or skeptical professor. She sounded annoyed half the time. It's a great book so please don't let the narration get in your way.

Live recording of 6 workshops. For me personally it was yet another example of The Untethered Souls thorns or Brené Brown and shame spirals.

The book is beautifully written and a great compliment to similar work that others are doing. The narration is spot on too. It is funny and smart and answers so many questions a must read.

I could listen to her speak her own written word forever! She has hit the nail on the head for me. I had no idea this was why I have been in a such a funk. I cannot thank Brene enough. The OnDemand workshop with Gifts of Vulnerability, this book, and The Daring Way weekend workshop have literally changed if not save my life. I want to shout it from the roof tops!

This is the third book I've gobbled up in a week. I wasn't a fan of the narrator but I respect the difficult job of so many voices. In parts though it was annoying especially in the beginning with the story seemed implausible. However, as she has done with her other books she follows the story all the way through no quick and tidy endings her characters stay true to themselves throughout the whole story. And as human beings can often seem a contradiction to themselves. Or misunderstood by an outsider. The characters themselves discover why there lives were contradictions at time. Maybe it's just the kid weed social worker in me that I too have seen these characters in real life. I enjoyed this perspective. I wonder how hard it would of been for us to find any compassion if we were exposed to both families experiences over those 27 years. I was sure I didn't like this book as well as the others and then I cried like a baby the last hour and a half of the story.

First Diane may very well be my new favorite author. After reading the Silent Sister I needed another good read. Diane does a great job of getting you right into the story and keeping the pace engaging and vivid. This was a hard listen due to the subject matter and as there seemed to be no positive outcomes or ending I was nervous to spend 10 hours angry, sad and frustrated due to the injustices. After listening to the final chapter and hearing the truth about the practice of sterilization lasting until 1976 and the misuse of power to cover up crimes, prejudices, racism, and ignorance I strongly believe everyone needs to know this portion of our history.

As I continue to her political, religious, economic and racial debates about what injustices do or don't .... Have or haven't existed and people telling other people to just get over it or it wasn't that bad or minimized and rationalizing a history they don't believe or understand, the more I believe it should be mandated reading: stories such as this, Selma or The UnBroken. Especially this story that I am sure many people are completely unaware of, and 1976 was only 49 years ago. Just because the majority of us are not evil does not mean that evil doesn't exist in the work nor does it mean that there are not still institutionalized evils still in place. Sorry for the tangent but the power of Diane's writing planted the outrage. She's an excellent writer. Thank you for shining a light on a little known atrocity right here at home in the great US of A.
