Narration is horrible
Revisado: 09-08-24
This could be an amazing book if I sat down to read the actual book, but I don't have time for that anymore. The narration is horrible. That chapters I did listen to, the Author, (who is also the narrator) has no emotion behind his voice. He also sped through the chapters like a middle school kid who got called on unexpectedly in class and was forced to read in front of everyone. The emphasis on being a "lifelong bachelor" rubbed me the wrong way but I gave it shot anyways. I just couldn't do it with the narration. I had to return this title.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Educational
Revisado: 04-28-24
This book started off good, but I can't continue listening. I wish it was less of an educational book and more in depth details, life events and personal feelings of the author. I realize she's trying to get to the bottom what's wrong with her but it's boring.

Well written
Revisado: 12-24-23
This book was very well written and the narration was excellent! It was difficult as a Mother to listen to this book and not hate Christina's mother! She had to know all those years. I give the author a lot of credit for coming forward and telling her story. I would love a second book to hear about Christina's life after her first 30 years.

In The Relentless Courage of a Scared Child, Tana Amen shares her incredible story of transformation - of growing up in poverty, a bullied latch-key kid raised on sugary cereal and junk food, to becoming a world-renowned food and fitness expert. Her challenging past of neglect, poverty, sexual abuse, thyroid cancer, and bouts of anxiety and depression set her on a path to find healing. Through her remarkable journey, we see more clearly the light that can shine through our own broken places and ultimately heal us: body, mind, and soul.

The bleeping out bad words was not necessary
Revisado: 04-30-23
Overall the book was okay. it didn't grab my attention like other memoirs. The censor beeping out "bad words" was unnecessary and ridiculous.

Teenage couch hopper
Revisado: 11-30-21
I love memoirs but this one bored me. A rebellious teenage Goth girl who chain smokes, gets black out drunk and couch hops from friend to friend finding a place to sleep at night. That's pretty much the entire book. There wasn't much of a conclusion but there wasn't much of a story to begin with.
I didn't feel the Author was a runaway, more of a girl who just wanted to hang with friends all the time and get as drunk as humanly possible. If this book had an odor it would smell like stale cigarette smoke. body odor and day old booze. Not a fan.

The Butcher Shop Girl begins with Carmen’s unique coming-of-age as she’s ripped from her extended family after her Catholic parents’ divorce. Learning to conquer unusual places in the name of survival, Carmen spends her childhood working in her mother’s slaughterhouse in prairie Alberta, tearing through flesh and getting up to trouble. To escape a violent home, she bounces from house to house, working on the family farm, and eventually in the oil patch.

It was good
Revisado: 03-30-21
I enjoyed this book. Good story line, narration was great. Most of the book is about her life as a stripper, but she talks about her family and the way she grew up which was fascinating to me.
I only wish the Author spoke more in depth about her parents and especially what happened after her stripper days were over. I would love a second book to find out where her life lead her in adulthood and if she ever reunited and reconciled with her Mother.
Overall it was a super interesting read.

Brutal
Revisado: 02-20-21
Excellent book, very violent, but everything needed to be told. The abuse was horrendous. The worst I've ever read about. So heartbreaking I found myself so sad for Hannah over and over again. How one person could suffer so severely and crawl out of that dark place is beyond me. Hannah will live with the affects of the abuse the rest of her life and that makes me so sad for her.

Just so sad
Revisado: 02-14-21
I loved this book but it made me so sad at the same time. I wish it went further into what happened when the Author went home. Her relationship with her parents and if she ever forgave them. Did they ever take accountability for their actions? All subjects I wish she touched on more.
Very well written book. I'm glad that horrible religious boot camp was exposed, as it should be. Poor David. He seemed like a wonderful person.

In 1979 Liz Pryor is a 17-year-old girl from a good family in the wealthy Chicago suburbs. Halfway through her senior year of high school, she discovers that she is pregnant - a fact her parents are determined to keep a secret from her friends, siblings, and community forever. One snowy January day, after driving across three states, her mother drops her off at what Liz thinks is a Catholic home for unwed mothers - but which is, in truth, a locked government-run facility for delinquent and impoverished pregnant teenage girls.
