Interesting, creepy, and accusatory

Fascinating confession, but disturbing in how much it blames the victims and justifies actions.

Historia
James Verini arrived in Iraq in the summer of 2016 to write about life in the Islamic State. He stayed to cover the jihadis' last great stand, the Battle of Mosul, not knowing it would go on for nearly a year, nor that it would become, in the words of the Pentagon, "the most significant urban combat since WWII." They Will Have to Die Now takes the listener into the heart of the conflict against the most lethal insurgency of our time. We see unspeakable violence, improbable humanity, and occasional humor.

Best narrarated book I've ever heard
Revisado: 10-18-20
I listen to a lot of audio books, and this was by far the best narrarated one I've heard. The story itself is enthralling (though graphic, so skip if you're squeamish) and emotional, and the combination of a fantastically written book and expert narraration is unbeatable. Strongly recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about the rise of ISIS, Iraqi history, and the Battle for Mosul.

Historia
In 2004, journalist Bill Bishop coined the term "the big sort". Armed with startling new demographic data, he made national news in a series of articles showing how Americans have been sorting themselves into alarmingly homogeneous communities - not by region or by state but by city and even neighborhood. Over the past three decades, we have been choosing the neighborhoods (and churches and news shows) compatible with our lifestyles and beliefs.

Dry data but some interesting insights
Revisado: 08-15-20
Basically just reading the data from one study after another. The author did a poor job of connecting the dots - giving the reader/listener the "so what," and most frustratingly, absolutely no recommendations on how to solve the problem or improve the current state of affairs.
The book felt very dated, as it primarily focuses on the Bush vs. Kerry election cycle, so the present day reader can't help but wonder how much worse things must be now. Similarly, the book doesn't really touch on the power of the internet, algorithms, etc which has obviously changed our world dramatically.
I really struggled to finish this and considered giving up several times, but ultimately am glad I finished it because I did learn some interesting insights despite its flaws.

Great overview of US-China relations
Revisado: 08-01-20
I asked my friend who is a China expert in the US government for one book recommendation and he suggested this one. It did not disappoint. This is a great overview of modern Chinese history, talks about China's rise, and most importantly (for me at least) answers the "so what" question of why China's global rise matters and why we all (not just Americans, but the whole world) should be paying closer attention.

Good mix of stories and lessons
Revisado: 06-07-20
A friend of mine recommended this to me years ago, and I finally got the chance to sink in, finishing it in a few days. The author does a great job of sharing exciting stories from his time with Delta Force, while extrapolating lessons learned that can be applied in any industry, but particularly in the military.

Historia
A thriving monarchy had ruled over Hawaii for generations. Taro fields and fish ponds had long sustained native Hawaiians but sugar plantations had been gradually subsuming them. This fractured, vulnerable Hawaii was the country that Queen Lili‘uokalani, or Lili‘u, inherited when she came to power at the end of the nineteenth century.

Good background on Hawaii
Revisado: 06-02-20
Gives the reader a great overview of Hawaii history up until annexation. Easy to read and understand and pleasant narration. As many have commented though, the book doesn't touch the period from annexation (1900) to statehood (1959), so if you're looking for a more complete modern history you'll find this lacking. Still a thorough, fascinating, and tragic story of the loss of Hawaii's monarchy for those without a lot of knowledge about the topic.
