As an intern, I love hearing attendings reflect on their shortcomings and struggles during medical training. I have many. It’s refreshing to know I am not alone in that

As a graduating medical student about to enter residency, I found the takes in this book to be refreshing and honest. It’s interesting to see a field as complex as critical care evolve so drastically over one’s career. As I enter emergency medicine residency and possibly critical care afterwards, I’m curious to see how drastically in my own perspective evolves in the upcoming decades. It’s always nice to see you an attending physician be honest about the things that they don’t know as from the trainees perspective they look like these ethereal beings that seem to know Everything about their field. I would highly recommend this book.

As I plunge into my medical residency with a wife, kid, and 400k in student loans, driving my beat up 03 Camry, I found this book encouraging - do things regarding money for yourself, and don’t just keep up with the Jones’s. A wonderful listen.

I graduate med school next month - how easy it is for us in the profession to stay siloed within ourselves. This was a great reminder to look beyond ourselves, the EMR, our notes to write, authorizations from insurance companies, and not least of which, our own biases. Such a fantastic book. I’m better for hearing it

I would genuinely describe this book as fine. The initial several chapters seemed a bit slow to the point of what I thought the point of the book was, the idea of becoming 10% happier, but we eventually got to the point. I do appreciate that there were not so many platitudes or material statements regarding happiness, though. This book is just that. Becoming mindful He’s not going to be earth shattering, but it makes a positive difference that is noticeable to both yourself and others around you.

I find that books written by physicians tend to fall into two camps. There a testament of overcoming burnout or a grandiose reflection on the beauty of medicine. I’m happy to say that this buck is neither of those two things. Don’t give me wrong, this position has faced a significant amount of challenges in her career thus far, and I hope the bulk of her life‘s challenges are behind her. This rare perspective of serving as an attending physician in a hospital where she underwent “all the types of shock” He was both inspiring and thought-provoking. The reader did a great job encapsulating the authors life experiences.

I’m a second year med student. This is one of the first physician books I’ve read that doesn’t have some stereotypical ending where the sun comes out, the Doc does EVERYTHING they want in their career, marriage, etc. and live happily ever after. This road is long. It changes you, and not always in the best way.

A quick listen, but a worthwhile one.

Hearing VP Biden talk about his own story is truly breathtaking. I'm happy I could hear some of the underlying struggles he had to endure while in office from '08-'16

My relationship with drinking as I've gotten older and moved beyond college. Some of the words in this book really hit close to home. Like an older lover that you know you should move on from, but can't for some reason, the lure of alcohol pervades logic. Why am I reaching for another drink before others have time to take their first sip? Are my intentions for drinking different fomr other people?

The reader had flawless presentation. A slightly muted, intense monotone. Chilled me to my core at times, while other portions of this story made me tear up.

I was surprised by this book - in a good way! I was initially expecting the first half - the trials and tribulations of a young black man entering a field where he is far in the minority, connecting to his patients which are also people of color. Although those are touching moments in time, I appreciated the Author’s evolution in perspective; blackness in some ways creates no inherent bond as handedness. The intimacy and trust established with his patients was earned on his own empathetic tendencies - something off of his own merit as a physician.

As I enter medical training, I hope to emulate such constant empathy as the author.

Reader was great as well, even though protease is pro-tee-ACE, not pro-tease ;)
