Historia
1 Dead in Attic is a collection of stories by Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose, recounting the first harrowing year and a half of life in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Celebrated as a local treasure and heaped with national praise, Rose provides a rollercoaster ride of observation, commentary, emotion, tragedy, and even humor - in a way that only he could find in a devastated wasteland. They are stories of the dead and the living, stories of survivors and believers, stories of hope and despair.

Profound and Moving.
Revisado: 02-18-25
Extremely moving account of the year following hurricane Katrina and Chris Rose’s columns in the Times Picayune. Very well done, very sad, very moving, and so many wonderful characters. Highly recommend. Audible, do better. There were so many mispronunciations of important New Orleans Streets (too many to count!!) if I heard Tchoupitoulas mispronounced one more time I thought I was going to scream. New Orleans pronounces things differently. So please, do your research and find out that streets that sound like the city of Milan in Italy are actually pronounced Mylan. Or Prytania, Esplanade, Metairie, I could go on and on, so many mispronunciations. The reader was absolutely fantastic. It wasn’t his fault. But if you’re gonna have someone narrate a book about New Orleans, why don’t you find a local who knows how to pronounce things correctly.

The head of the Mortmain family is Cassandra Mortmain’s father, a writer suffering from writer's block who has not published anything since his first book, a hit entitled, Jacob Wresstling. Ten years before the story begins, he took out a forty-year lease on a dilapidated but beautiful castle, hoping to find either inspiration or isolation there; now, his family is selling off the furniture to buy food.

Tender and beautiful book

When I first started listening to this book, I thought it was going to be boring. But of course, it was anything but boring. What a touching and tender story about human nature and the capacity of the heart to love. Highly recommend.

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans.

Nee Orleans classic
Revisado: 09-14-24
This is one of my favorite books and I hadn’t listened to it. Narration was wonderful and he did an excellent job giving voice to the characters. My only criticism is several of the street names were mispronounced. New Orleans pronounces things differently. Prytania, Burgundy, Chartres, Poydras and Tchoupitoulas were mispronounced. Not the narrator’s fault, but it seems if you are publishing a narrator of a book about New Orleans, it is good idea to find out how the locals pronounce things.

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Remarkable Narration!
Revisado: 10-12-23
Richard Armitage does an amazing job with the narration; on par with Jim Dale (who narrated Harry Potter.) I just finished Demon Copperhead and had never read David Copperfield. I must say, as much as I loved Demon Copperhead, I enjoyed David Copperfield to the fullest! Such wonderful characters written with such sensitivity and beauty. Highly Recommend.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Revisado: 03-21-23
This book should have been half as long. I could not wait for it to end. Great narrator although the New Orleans accents were mostly inaccurate. And Anne Rice should know better. It’s not a trolley;it’s a streetcar!

What a wonderful book. I laughed, I cried, I rejoiced throughout. Viola has such a Beautiful and resonant voice and I felt is though I was sitting down with her and she was telling me the story of her life. And what a beautiful and wondrous life it is. Despite a multitude of hardships, setbacks and difficult family situations she was able to rise above and create a magnificent life for herself. It was truly an enjoyable listening experience and I highly recommend it.

Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, is looking more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Will she turn out like her despised Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father have spent their whole lives avoiding and deriding? There must be a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.

Terrible Narration
Revisado: 11-11-20
I love Marisa Tomei, but the narration was nearly unbearable to me. It sounded like someone making fun of Italian American accents. I don't understand why the book just wasn't read in English, since it's an English translation. She could have then pronounced the Italian words correctly. Plus, I didn't like any of the characters and found it difficult to empathize with them. I loved her previous books, but can't recommend this one - especially if you are a Ferrante lover.
