Historia
Oscar Wilde's first play confronts the hypocrisy of public "morality" compared with genuine, private kindness. The reasons for its continued popularity are not difficult to identify: the play's witty dialogue contains many of Wilde's most quoted aphorisms, its stylish setting provides opportunities for elegant presentation, and its cast of memorable characters play out a story which is genuinely moving. This new audio production brings together a full cast worthy of Wilde's creative genius.

Wilde's delicious humor
Revisado: 03-15-25
The irony, the satire, the heartbreak. Nothing is new to us in his work -- because so many have used his work as the foundation and source of their own!

I can't do it
Revisado: 09-15-20
I tried to adjust to the weird background soundtrack, but after 17 chapters I decided to throw in the towel. I will be returning this edition and hope I can exchange it for a regular audiobook. This narrator is good and I can use my own imagination to color the storyline, based on the excellent descriptions by the author.

Historia
In the 1850s, the young Frederick Law Olmsted was adrift, a restless farmer and dreamer in search of a mission. He found it as an undercover correspondent in the South for the up-and-coming New York Times. For the Connecticut Yankee, pen name "Yeoman", the South was alien, often hostile territory. Yet Olmsted traveled for 14 months, by horseback, steamboat, and stagecoach, seeking dialogue and common ground. Tony Horwitz rediscovers Yeoman Olmsted amidst the discord and polarization of our own time. Is America still one country?

Revisado: 04-24-20
I adore Tony Horwitz's writing! If I ever leave my husband, it will be to run off with Tony for a ramble through history and the world we inhabit! Every one of his books seems to be his best . . . and remains so the second or third time around. He's one of our greatest contemporary writers. I absolutely adore and revere James Michener. This is one of his that I can re-read often and love it everytime. Chesapeake makes me cry, and laugh out loud, with the rich characters, the plight of the native people and wildlife, and the life of the land and water.
I can't say enough good about this delight.

Historia
On a chance visit to Plymouth Rock, Tony Horwitz makes an unsettling discovery. A history buff since early childhood, expensively educated at university - a history major, no less! - he's reached middle age with a third-grader's grasp of early America. In fact, he's mislaid more than a century of American history, the period separating Columbus' landing in 1492 from the arrival of English colonists at Jamestown in 16-oh-something. Did nothing happen in between?

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Laughed out loud!
Revisado: 05-07-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, because of the many different storylines woven into one man's village life.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand?
Among the many scenes which will stay with me is the party put on by the ladies' committee at the country club.
What does Peter Altschuler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His very British accent brings the major truly to life.
Who was the most memorable character of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and why?
The major himself, and although he was in some ways more reminiscent of an earlier generation (i.e. Agatha Christie characters), I found him extremely appealing.
