Loved the Story, Not the Performer
Revisado: 08-02-21
Wild Seed was so well performed, I had high expectations going into this one. Unfortunately, the reader just ok. It was frequently very difficult to distinguish one character from another - thankfully, the material was good enough to stand on its own.

Historia
For a thousand years, Doro has cultivated a small African village, carefully breeding its people in search of seemingly unattainable perfection. He survives through the centuries by stealing the bodies of others, a technique he has so thoroughly mastered that nothing on Earth can kill him. But when a gang of New World slavers destroys his village, ruining his grand experiment, Doro is forced to go west and begin anew. He meets Anyanwu, a centuries-old woman whose means of immortality are as kind as his are cruel. Now they begin a struggle that will last centuries.

Expected Better, esp for the price
Revisado: 05-23-19
There are plenty of free podcasts out there doing better work with a smaller production budget. I really enjoyed listening and thought the whole cast did wonderful work, but I kept wondering why I paid for it. It was good, but not same-price-as-full-audio-book good. If you want an old timey, magical work podcast, I recommend Hello From The Magic Tavern.

Historia
Be noisy. Natalie Savage grew up hearing these words from her father, who admired Walter Cronkite so much he named the family dog after him. Natalie - who spent her 20s missing out on life’s benchmarks - finally sees her efforts pay off when she’s assigned to cover the White House for her network. The problem? The position is only temporary, a test to see if she has what it takes. She has always relied on her grit, her principles and her news sense to gain success. But now her competition is a frat boy who got his big break by eating raw animal parts on a reality show.

Great insight into newsworld, Just OK novel
Revisado: 05-10-19
I love Jessica Yellin, and for that reason, I really loved the look inside the world of news media culture. But as a fiction writer, I found the characters lacking depth. And as the performer, I had trouble with how she interpreted the narration. Wish this would have been read by a professional actor.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

I dunno. It felt like a bad sequel. Listen for a couple of hours and just didn’t care about any of the characters.

Historia
On an average day in America, seven young people aged 19 or under will be shot dead. In Another Day in the Death of America, award-winning Guardian journalist Gary Younge tells the stories of the lives lost during the course of a single day in the United States. It could have been any day, but Younge has chosen November 23, 2013. Far from a dry account of gun policy in the United States or a polemic about the dangers of gun violence, the book is a gripping chronicle of an ordinary but deadly day in American life.

Important Book
Revisado: 06-12-17
The author's exploration into the lives of ten kids killed by guns on a particular day is as thoughtful and pointed as it is depressing and aggravating. It's a book that shouldn't have to be written, but needed to be.
The reader was fine, but there was an affect on the voice which I found distracting. Specifically, he had a propensity for not finishing the ends of words, which frequently pulled me out of the narrative.

Great book, weird production decisions
Revisado: 03-16-15
I was a little leery about a novel being read by its author. Non-fiction or autobiography is one thing, but I expect a performance when it comes to fiction.
Neil Gaiman did not disappoint. This book was as well written as it was performed, and I couldn't recommend it enough.
My one issue comes more from the production side - there were several moments in the book where some dummy made a decision to add either a mechanical reverb effect or an echo to the narration. Usually, it was during flashbacks or when a recorded voice was speaking as part of the story. I found these little extras to be jarring and distracting, and at times, they made it difficult to even understand what was being said.
Luckily, these never lasted too too long. But still, I wish they would have just kept it simple. The performance was enough, no need for fluff.

Here is the tumultuous, heartrending, true story of the Romanovs - at once an intimate portrait of Russia's last royal family and a gripping account of its undoing. Using captivating photos and compelling first person accounts, award-winning author Candace Fleming (Amelia Lost; The Lincolns) deftly maneuvers between the imperial family’s extravagant lives and the plight of Russia's poor masses, making this an utterly mesmerizing listen as well as a perfect resource for meeting Common Core standards.

Author did wonderful job contrasting Romanov family life with political life and against the lives of the peasants. This is a really fun read.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Meh
Revisado: 06-22-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Not sure if it was the performance or the writing, but I couldn't figure out why anyone, let alone Achilles, would be into this guy Patroclus. He's such a whiner!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Frazer Douglas?
Not sure. He wasn't bad - just kinda mopey. Again, that may have just been the writing.
Was The Song of Achilles worth the listening time?
It was fun because I like the classical elements. And cause I'm a big mo.
