Historia
Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

Great book and reader
Revisado: 06-21-24
So great to find this book read by Juliette Stevenson. She’s one of the best with Jane Austen. The only off thing is she sometimes replaces a word with a throat clearing sound. It’s a bit bizarre and not infrequent. I suppose it’s a copyright issue but I wish that wasn’t done.

Historia
The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

Great book
Revisado: 06-04-24
This reflection on WW2 was one of the best I’ve read/heard. The author has great insight and is humble and fair with his thoughts. I really like his grasp on historical parallels which was pretty unique. This was kind of old school writing which is greatly missed. Very my well written.

This was the worst military book I’ve listened to. It was political history through the opinions of the author. There are too many good ones to waste time getting the author’s personal opinions and interpretations claiming to be historical .

It is said that a man is grown by his past, and so it was with William Brewer. Before he took command of HMS Defiant in a hurricane and before he hunted pirates in HMS Revenge, Brewer endured a crucible of fire that molded him into the legend he became. Fresh from the tutelage of Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena, Brewer signs on for a cruise under Captain Bush in HMS Lydia to the Mediterranean to battle the Barbary Pirates.

Okay
Revisado: 06-09-23
I enjoyed the first two books from this series as I’m well familiar with the Hornblower series. This book is fine but they make Bush rather stupid which was inconsistent with the Hornblower series. This is definitely my least favorite of the series so far. Also, the voice for Jerard is poorly chosen.

Not really about USC football
Revisado: 12-20-22
This isn’t a bad book but it really has almost nothing to do with USC or sideline stories. It’s really a biography of Tom Kelly and his life and professional experiences which includes some USC but all of his other teams and experiences too. If you looking for a book about USC football, this won’t offer a lot other than one chapter which doesn’t cover past the 70’s.

Not great
Revisado: 06-20-22
The author does a thorough job but imposes too much modern thought and n Jane Austen and her time. The author is also obsessed with sex and brings up it throughout. There is also some bad language. The Reader does a great job which helps. Not recommended.

One of my new favorite audio books
Been a fan of The Princess Bride since college and a huge fan since I had kids. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and Cary does a fantastic job narrating. It’s amazing they got so many of the original cast and crew to tell their stories. I also really appreciate that, like the movies, it stayed tasteful and classy so my kids could listen too. Definitely going to enjoy this one a long time with many listens through the book. Thanks Cary Elwes for putting this together!!

For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next.

Soap opera
Revisado: 04-12-21
This isn’t a real account of military life but a soap opera drama that has an aircraft carrier of it’s setting. The language is legit but nothing else is even close to realistic. This has more appeal more to my mother than to me. Definitely not recommended unless you like soap operas.
