Historia
From the master of crime fiction comes an unexpectedly whimsical short story about this San Diego surfer whose life plan is working perfectly until he meets a wealthy woman at an art gallery opening (the hors d’oeuvres), falls in love, and then has to masquerade as an upstanding member of society.

Smiled through the entire story!
Revisado: 10-22-24
Don Winslow continues to entertain with every story. No matter the subject, his stories are engaging and, for me, very inclusive. I can relate to most of the characters in his stories.
Ed Harris is a great actor, and his voice and inflection are perfect for these stories.

From the mind of the man Stephen King calls "a master of the macabre", comes a brilliant new collection of no-punches-pulled horror stories, some never-before-collected and many originals that have never been published anywhere before. Bentley Little can take the innocuous, twist it around, and write a story that will change your way of thinking. Walking Alone: Short Stories is a shining example of his talent to scare you, creep you out, and make you shudder.

Everything was perfect.
Revisado: 01-10-24
I was very impressed with Red Rising. The characters, the worlds and the lifestyles. I had a difficult time staying with this book in the beginning (I am not a science fiction or space drama fan) but I am so glad that I stayed with it.
This book adds to those qualities very well. Wonderful cliff-hanger at the end of this book.
I suppose that this book could be a stand alone novel, but reading this book without reading the first would be like understanding every other word.
I can't wait for book three!

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

“This is a story about an idea that I have,” Americana legend and self-proclaimed “recovering folk singer” Steve Earle states early in his enthralling Words + Music performance. “This job of mine becomes an artform spontaneously in 1965 - when Bob Dylan wants to be John Lennon, and John Lennon wants to be Bob Dylan, whether either one of them would admit it or not - and in that moment, rock and roll becomes art."

It's Steve Earle, Y'all!
Revisado: 05-10-21
If you don't understand what that means, listen to a few of his albums and you will understand. It is an honest, straight forward history lesson set to music and interesting anecdotes. Full of humor, tinged with nostalgia and delivered in a "Just sitting on the porch talking" style that makes Steve is so enjoyable.

Historia
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches.

Revisado: 12-29-20
Shirley Jackson was a remarkable author and storyteller, her work stands up to the passage of time and the changes of tastes.
I have never heard of, nor heard the work of,
Gabrielle de Cuir before this audio book, but she adds depth in her reading.

Historia
Crazy Horse was as much feared by tribal foes as he was honored by allies. His war record was unmatched by any of his peers, and his rout of Custer at the Little Bighorn reverberates through history. Yet so much about him is unknown or steeped in legend. Crazy Horse: A Lakota Life corrects older, idealized accounts - and draws on a greater variety of sources than other recent biographies - to expose the real Crazy Horse: not the brash Sioux warrior we have come to expect but a modest, reflective man whose courage was anchored in Lakota piety.

Sing-song presentation, Arrogant style. Offensive.
Revisado: 07-01-20
I attempted to listen to this book several times. Each time I could not stand the narrator for more than five minutes.
His nasal voice and strange tempo, inappropriate inflection, unrecognizable accent and delivery felt like I was listening to a person struggling with English trying to read a children's book.
I cannot judge the contents of this selection because if the above mentioned narration and the fact that the author critically attacked a previous book on Crazy Horse unmercifully in the first chapter.
The author's " My book is so much better" attitude is antithetical to the subject and offensive to people familiar with the culture of The Lakota people generally and The Oglala specifically.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

The best recording of the classic vampire story.
Revisado: 08-30-19
There is a reason that this story has influenced, in one way or another, all the successive vampire stories. So many different versions of Dracula have been filmed or written... no matter how gory or explicit, none hold the sheer terror or eloquence of the original.
