Historia
Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle, aka the Wee Free Men, a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny.

Historia
Robbie Parsons is one of London's finest, a black cab driver who knows the city by heart. In his backseat is a man with a gun in his hand - a man who brazenly committed a crime in front of the Artemis Club then jumped in and ordered Parsons to drive. As the criminal eventually escapes to Nairobi, Detective Superintendent Richard Jury comes across the case. He knew one of the victims, a professor of astrophysics and an expert gambler. Feeling personally affronted, Jury enlists his whole gang of merry characters to contend with a case that involves Tanzanian gem mines, a closed Reno casino, and a hidden pub.

One of the best.

The plot is excellent with twists and turns. But the best is what a delightful and unlikely stage it is set upon. Plenty of humor as we watch our favorite characters in different settings.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Not O’Brian. But makes me intend to go back and reread/ listen to, O’Brian’s The Unknown Shore, based somewhat on these events.
The reader tends to emote a bit, occasionally a mere chapter number is read with a silly amount of drama. But the reading is otherwise fine if fast for my ears. I listened at 0.9x speed.

Historia
If you ran into Stephen Tobolowsky on the street, you would not be mistaken: Yes, you’ve seen him before. A childhood dentist? A former geometry teacher? Your local florist? Tobolowsky is a character actor, one of the most prolific screen and stage presences of our time, having appeared in productions that range from Deadwood to Glee, from Mississippi Burning to Groundhog Day. But Stephen Tobolowsky, it turns out, is not just an actor; he is also a dazzlingly talented storyteller and writer.

Got unnecessarily ugly political
Revisado: 05-03-22
It was mildly entertaining to start, though hardly profound.
But in chapter 3 started to get mean spirited about the author’s religious and political views.
Who needs that? Not me. Wrong place for that. And since the narrator is the author, you can’t blame interpretation.

Historia
In the wake of World War II, as turmoil and chaos were giving way to optimism, Americans were looking for inspiration and role models showing that it was possible to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top—and they found it in Stymie, the failed racehorse plucked from the discard heap by trainer Hirsch Jacobs. Taking listeners on a crowd-pleasing ride with Stymie and Jacobs, Out of the Clouds unwinds a real-life Horatio Alger tale of a dauntless team and its working-class fans who lived vicariously through the stouthearted little colt they embraced as their own.

A must read for very horse racing fan.
Revisado: 03-27-22
A worthy telling of a remarkable tale of an even more remarkable horseman and the horse he is best remembered for. The authors’ research for this book, and their understanding of the subject is excellent and worthy of the subject of it.
The narrator does a pretty good job, and brings out the characters of the major players, but is clearly new to the world of horses as he makes some fairy odd work pronouncing and annunciating racing terms and famous names.

A well constructed narrative of the nearly endless trials of an optimist.
The story is well written and well paced. It is written with compassion.
It is also well and sympathetically narrated.

The horrible, loud and superfluous music at breaks, on the other hand. That is truly vile.

Historia
A classic Ngaio Marsh mystery thriller combining drugs and sacrifice. High in the mountains stands the magnificent Saracen fortress, home of the mysterious Mr. Oberon, leader of a coven of witches. It is not the historic castle, however, that intrigues Roderick Alleyn, on holiday with his family, but the suspicion that a huge drugs ring operates from within its ancient portals. But before the holiday is over, someone else has stumbled upon the secret.

Not quite the usual detective story.
Revisado: 07-13-21
Rather than traveling the straightforward detective narrative, this plot is a bit contrived and struggles more than expected with plausibility.
In this tale falls for invoking her detective in a convoluted case requiring uncharacteristic derringer do, and even falls for the sin of threatening the detective’s family.
In spite of all that Alleyn and Troy give a good accounting of themselves, and are surrounded by rich and interesting characters.

If you loved the others, you will love this one too.
Revisado: 10-15-18
I very much enjoy the series especially as read by Grover Gardner. The characters are wonderful.
The plot was interesting with lots of twists, although I’d say it had a few more, and rather larger, holes, than some of his others. But it didn’t bother as mush as much as such things usually do. At least as I listened to it. It’s possible that if I was reading it in print, the holes would bother me more.
