Historia
“From exactly midnight until daybreak, the Namiya General Store advice box will be reopening for one night only.” When three delinquents hole up in an abandoned general store after their most recent robbery, to their great surprise, a letter drops through the mail slot in the store’s shutter. This seemingly simple request for advice sets the trio on a journey of discovery as, over the course of a single night, they step into the role of the kindhearted former shopkeeper who devoted his waning years to offering thoughtful counsel to his correspondents.

Lacking in all Ways
Revisado: 03-24-24
The story is quite difficult to follow, with several different timelines. The characters speak like children, repeating their thoughts and words constantly. It is just not all that interesting of a plot. Could be an issue with the English translation, but I am baffled by all of the positive reviews.

When the rules turn deadly, winning is everything. Only available from Audible, a gripping psychological thriller from the author of Silent Child, Saving April, and The Broken Ones. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Lisa Jewell and Paula Hawkins. The perfect couple. The perfect marriage. The perfect game. Effie and Ben May have everything. Success. Beauty. Glamour. But beneath the charming smiles and expensive clothes, a twisted game is in progress. A game for which only they know the rules.

Story is underwhelming

The characters repeat their thoughts and dialogue throughout. The story is underwhelming, with very little payoff.

Historia
In March 2021, an obscure financial technology company called Greensill Capital collapsed, going into administration. As it unravelled, a multibillion-dollar scandal emerged that would shake the very foundations of the British political system, drawing in swiss bankers, global CEOs, and world leaders, including former British Prime Minister, David Cameron. At the centre was an Australian financier named Lex Greensill. Pyramid of Lies charts the meteoric rise and spectacular downfall of Greensill and his company.

Could not quite get into it
Revisado: 05-29-23
The writing is good, the narration is good, but the events are just not all that salacious. It is hard to get too fired up about an obscure supply chain finance company you have never heard of.

Historia
In March 2006, the world’s richest men sipped champagne in an opulent New York hotel. They were preparing to compete in a poker tournament with million-dollar stakes. At the card table that night was Peter Muller, who managed a fabulously successful hedge fund called PDT. With him was Ken Griffin, who was the tough-as-nails head of Citadel Investment Group. There, too, were Cliff Asness, the sharp-tongued, mercurial founder of the hedge fund AQR Capital Management, and Boaz Weinstein, chess “life master” and king of the credit-default swap.

Lacking
Revisado: 04-28-22
This book does not live up to its promise. There is no cohesive story throughout, just a collection of loosely related information. The characters are not well developed, there are too many, and there is too much filler like poker and what they eat. Very little in the way of "new" reporting, it is mostly just from other existing books, articles, and public documents. If you have read a handful of other finance books, you will find this book repetitive. If you haven't, instead go read Flash Boys, When Genius Failed, Too Big To Fail, or The Big Short. You'll get more out of them than from this book.

Dated

The general principles in the book aren't bad, but most of the practical advice is dated. The book is from 1992, before trades were conducted by computer.

Historia
In 1986, before Michael Lewis became the best-selling author of The Big Short, Moneyball, and Flash Boys, he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to New York- and London-based bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush. Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years - a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business.

Excellent story, excellent performance
Revisado: 02-19-22
Finally, the full, unabridged version of the audiobook is available. The story is from the 1980s but could just as easily be written today. Michael Lewis's narration is stellar. My only slight gripe is that the recording contains random and unnecessary sound effects and short musical clips.

Historia
Billionaire investors. If we think of them, it’s with a mixture of awe and suspicion. Clearly, they possess a kind of genius - the proverbial Midas Touch. But are the skills they possess transferable? And do they have anything to teach us besides making money? In Richer, Wiser, Happier, William Green draws on interviews that he’s conducted over 25 years with many of the world’s greatest investors. As he discovered, their talents extend well beyond the financial realm.

Investing advice you're heard before
Revisado: 12-26-21
This book isn't bad, but if you've spent even a moderate amount of time in the investing world, you've heard all this advice before. Lots of repetition. The book could be at least 33% shorter. The narrator sounds like he's trying to be grandiose.

Mundane stories
Revisado: 09-29-21
I loved the movie, but this book does not need to exist. It’s full of mundane and unremarkable stories from the making of the movie. Nothing interesting or remarkable, just basic production stuff. Overly full of fawning praise of all involved in the movie.

A number-one New York Times best seller and arguably the best business narrative ever written, Barbarians at the Gate is the classic account of the fall of RJR Nabisco. An enduring masterpiece of investigative journalism by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar, it includes a new afterword by the authors that brings this remarkable story of greed and double-dealings up to date 20 years after the famed deal.

Good book but too dense

The story is well told but it goes on for too long and too in depth. Not every phone call or meal needs to be detailed. Still, an incredible story about Wall Street and LBOs.
