I found this book a very frustrating listen. Everyone needs therapy. The characters are simplistic, almost caricatures, and the FMC in particular is not very smart. Much of the book covers time when the characters are in high school and college in flashback, and I generally avoid characters that young.

The icing on the cake was the truly terrible Scottish accents from both narrators for one of the minor characters. CJ Bloom should be contractually prohibited from voicing Scottish characters completely. Unless, you want ten to sound like Russians.

I'm a spinner, knitter, and nålbinder, and love learning more about the history of fiber crafting. But this is so much more. The social and economic impact of sheep in the human world are fascinating. The story is told in an accessible, engaging, and often humorous way, with outstanding narration. I highly recommend it not only for fiber lovers and history lovers, but anyone interested in an enjoyable and interesting listen.

I have actually read these books before and have loved them. The writing is smart and sexy, the characters three-dimensional, and the stories compelling. Sierra Simone has never disappointed me.

The only shortcoming for me is that, much as I love Zara Hampton-Brown as a narrator, her voice for Julian Markham was like fingernails on a blackboard. He sounded like he had both throat cancer and a horrible sinus infection. If they could have done this in duet, with Shane East voicing all of Julian's dialogue, I would have given it six stars.

Another solid read from Donna Alam

Donna Alam is one of my “go to” authors; I always look forward to her releases and can’t think of a book she’s written that I didn’t like. No Romeo is no exception. It’s in many ways a typical enemies to lovers “arrangement” trope, but the main and secondary characters are well drawn, the story is engaging, and the spice is ON. POINT. Bonus points for cute animals in the story.

I have only two criticisms, the first of which is just a pet peeve of mine and may not bother others. Characters assuming what they know is going on without asking a single question is a plot device that makes me hurt myself rolling my eyes. The second is that the “misunderstanding” (which wouldn’t have been one if the FMC didn’t jump to conclusions higher than Simone Biles) was so completely predictable, that I started to question the FMC’s intelligence. I saw what was going to happen a mile away. Still, the ending was absolutely hilarious.

All that said, it was a very enjoyable read, and anyone who enjoys Donna Alam’s work will enjoy this one. This is one audiobook where the narrators, Summer Morton and Wil M Watt elevated the story to the next level.

My favorite romances have characters who are actual grown ups having realistic relationship problems and making very human mistakes along the way. I love that this story has characters that don't make dumb, immature decisions. When they screw up, it makes sense why they did. The writing is great. The spice is on point. Wil M Watt is an outstanding narrator (Justine Eyre is so-so). Will be reading/listening to more from this author.

How not to write a curvy girl story

I was hoping for some uncomplicated escapist romance to listen to, and this is definitely that. But she lost me with the constant, unrelenting negative self-talk from the woman in the story. Not only negative self-talk, but telling the male character that he shouldn't want her because she's too fat. It was beyond tedious and it Never. Lets. Up. I love a good curvy girl romance, but this is not that.

The narrators were decent, but not especially good. Not nearly enough emotion or animation in their voices.

I've read this book before and picked up the audiobook on sale. Much as I loved it in print, the narration really brought it to life.

I'm normally not a fan of characters who engage in a lot of negative self-talk, but in this book it's handled differently, and in a very good way. It illustrates that even for someone who has done a good job of maintaining body positivity, decades of hurt can rear their ugly head at any time and pull you down temporarily. Ben's realization that you don't have to be perfectly fixed all of the time, that you can have good days and bad days and that's ok, is the lesson that Ireland needed to take home, and she eventually did.

I also adored Caleb's description of how he realized that soft, plump, curvy women were what he found attractive, and that it shouldn't be treated as a kink or a fetish.

And if course, having it all wrapped up in Sierra Simone's exceptional and sensual wordcraft is just icing on the cake. This book, both in print and on audio, is another true gem.

An absolute triumph

This book is a treasure whether read standalone or if the reader is already familiar with the Jacobite Chronicles, but even moreso if you've read them. Reading the childhood of Alex, Duncan, and Angus MacGregor might not sound like compelling reading, but the story is woven so masterfully that even I, as one who isn't even fond of children, could not put it down. The heartfelt descriptions of parents observing the people their children are becoming are fascinating and touching. Knowing the story of the MacGregor brothers as adults from the main book series makes seeing how they grew up an absolute delight.

The narration by Wil M Watt and Mary Jane Wells is truly extraordinary, probably the best narration I've ever listened to. And the addition of a lovely Gaelic lullaby sung by the incomparable Karen Matheson is the icing on the cake.

This is one I know I could listen to over and over, and no doubt will.

More fantasy than historical romance

I was looking for a good medieval historical romance and willing to put up with a little time travel to get it. What I got was a fantasy full of magic that couldn't even decide what historical period it was in (it's supposed to be medieval but it's set during the Renaissance). The whole thing was just silly to me, but I'm not a fan of fantasy. If you are, you might enjoy it more than I did.

This it the third book I've listened to by this author. Her plots rest almost entirely on miscommunication, often due to assumptions made, withholding information, or outright lying. It gets old fast. The two main characters in this book deserve each other with their idiotic behavior.
