Historia
When journalist Robert Andrew Powell finished his first marathon, he cried, cradled in his father’s arms. Long distance runners understand where those tears come from, even if there are others who will never understand what drives someone to run 26.2 consecutive miles in a grueling mental and physical test. Powell’s emotional reaction to completing the race wasn’t just about the run, though. It was also about the joy and relief of coming back up after hitting rock bottom.

The true grit of the Marathon and the training.
Revisado: 05-29-17
I try to listen to all the athletic endurance books. I put this off for a while but, just like running, there is someone in a running novel for all runners. We all get something out of it that is unique to ourselves. I have been on a running peak for awhile running marathons and it was great to be reminded of the reward of qualifying for Boston.

Historia
Al Roker’s aha! moment came a decade ago. He was closing in on 350 pounds when he promised his dying father that he wasn’t going to keep living as he was. That led to his decision for a stomach bypass - and his life-changing drop to 190. But 50 of those pounds gradually crept back until he finally devised a plan, stuck to it, and got his life back. Never Going Back is Roker’s inspiring, candid, and often hilarious story of self-discovery, revealing a (now slimmer) side of his life that no one knows.

Never Going Back After Gastric Bypass Surgery
Revisado: 07-14-13
I was looking for an inspiration tale of how someone took control of their life and beat their obesity. I would hope that anyone who has this surgery never goes back to being obese. Al is a wonderful fellow but I was expecting a superhuman feat. Not everyone could afford such a surgery.

Historia
First and foremost a book about running, The Longest Race takes listeners alongside ultramarathoner Ed Ayres as he prepares for, runs, and finishes the JFK 50-mile race at a then record-breaking time for his age division - 60 and older. But for Ayres, this race was about more than just running, and the book also encompasses his musings and epiphanies along the way about possibilities for human achievement and the creation of a sustainable civilization.

If you are looking for a chance to read about one man's liberal philosophy while he runs an ultramarathon you have chosen the correct book. I had to quit this one.

Historia
Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

Massie really puts the research in to make this the consummate biography about Catherine. I have a new respect for her legacy. Entertaining because I find it fascinating to understand how life was back in her time. Sick? Just bleed 'em!

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

I mean everything. The author is extremely detailed. You will find that the level of understanding was greater at that time than you might have known. You will also learn much about influenza than you ever knew!

A couple of gems but mostly passing fancies. Unless you have perfect recall you will not find most of the topics useful. However, it is a good exercise in "outside looking at human behavior on the inside."

Historia
The author of 12 acclaimed books, Robert B. Reich is a Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, and has served in three national administrations. While many blamed Wall Street for the financial meltdown, Aftershock points a finger at a national economy in which wealth is increasingly concentrated at the top - and where a grasping middle class simply does not have the resources to remain viable.

Uninspiring
Revisado: 02-10-12
Perhaps redistributing wealth from the rich to the poor would increase economic activity. But I will never be convinced that any regulatory agency could efficiently and fairly pull it off. Plus, it ignores what I believe about fairness and the rewards of hard work - even if it does not maintain a red-hot economy. Mr. Reich does not discuss the ill affects of a steep Federal Deficit.

Historia
It begins with an ambushed commando raid that leaves all but one of the expatriate resistance fighters dead or captured. Though wounded, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, takes off on a courageous, incredible trek into the wilds of the Lyngen Alps, while the Nazis pursue him relentlessly. He suffers frostbite, snowblindness, and a terrible fall in an avalanche. At last, delirious and near death, he chances on to a cabin, where the first in a series of remarkably brave and clever men and women come to his aid.
