Excellent story and narration
Revisado: 08-04-16
I truly enjoyed this story! The characters, the good ones anyway, were likable and diverse. Sometimes I can tell that it's the same person inventing different characters, but not here.
The narration was the best I've heard. The first time Podehl did a woman's voice I had to look to see if there was more than one narrator. The emotion, timing, and voices were all fantastic. Podehl is a master performer. I could feel a bit what the characters would have felt.
There was some violence, but nothing over lewd.

lots of characters
Revisado: 06-21-16
It was a good pace and kept me interested. there were quiet a few characters to keep tabs on and even though it's spelled out for you at the end, I still am not sure everyone's role. And who was Eva? With a diagram, it would be easier to follow.

Wow! didn't expect that!
Revisado: 06-06-16
It would be easy to spoil the story so. .... I loved the relationships between the members of the main character's family. It made me smile. Between husband and wife, kids and parents, and siblings there're love, joy, acceptance, trust, light heartedness, respect, sincerity, and humor. The narrator, Steve Weber, brings out each personality vividly. I've got to look for more if his stuff. Dean Koontz had a way of making a scene very suspenseful while just talking about ordinary things. I love the individualality of each character. Many times when watching t. v. it's obvious that the same writer is writing multiple characters by the unnatural similarities. Here, Koontz makes truly individual characters on how they reason things out and how they view the world.
The subject matter would fit a horror movie, but descriptions are vague enough where I didn't have to fast forward - my finger was near the button though. There was a sprinkling of cuss words and curses. It was for stars because if the heavy subject matter.

I'm sure this won't be published for the obvious spoiler so I'll leave it at that, but that was my honest reaction beginning from when it happened even to now having finished. I guess Freed sucked me in though because I feel for fictional Cordell's loss.

An excellent writer read by a narrator with potential. I loved book one which I got in a daily deal and this one was a credit well spent. It also served to experience the same author and characters with a new reader.

Ends Well
Revisado: 02-16-16
Through the first half it seemed to come to an end and I was thinking that it was such an armature attempt at a mystery story. Ha! I fell for the whole thing.
There are no overly gruesome details. The characters are nicely developed. The foreshadowing isn't always true so it kept me guessing.

What a story!
Revisado: 02-13-16
This is almost like two stories in one. I love how it spans 2 generations spending a lot of time on the mom's life as a girl then the rest on the son without forgetting about mom. It made me think about the life of those who have to leave their country. It doesn't go into politics, like explaining why Russia invaded in the 70's (which I'd like to know) but that keeps it at an individual family level.
I covet two of the values that were demonstrated: food and school. They seem minor but both are taken for granted in my world. I wonder if we could have those values without living under oppression, or is that a gift for the oppressed.
The narrators are amazing flipping between two Afghan accents in the same conversation, Albanian drug smugglers, a pimp and an enslaved woman of the night, Greeks, Turks, French, English, etc.
The scenes are well described, but not overly so; enough to paint a detailed picture while keeping the film rolling.
Oh yeah, there're no pornographic scenes in the book. Sometimes you only find that out 3/4 the way through an otherwise great book.

Sleepy slow crust dust
Revisado: 02-09-16
Double speed is almost normal speed. I didn't really like the most likable character. I normally enjoy detective books, but this one wasn't my flavor. Not overly crude or graphic, at least the parts I heard while awake. It may appeal to a good - ol- boy, slow talking, desert rat.
