Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

I never knew history could come alive with the excellent narration of captivating writing. Possibly the most engaging and entertaining history book I’ve ever heard.

Historia
Over the last decade, the Religious Right has evolved. Some of the more extreme beliefs of American evangelicalism have begun to take hold in the mainstream. Scholar Matthew D. Taylor pulls back the curtain on a little-known movement of evangelical Christians who see themselves waging spiritual battles on a massive scale.

Approachable and Well-Researched
Revisado: 10-05-24
With easy to follow narratives pulled from his research, Dr Taylor lays out the facts of how the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) emerged and became the major political force of Charismatics and Pentecostals in American Christian Nationalism. I found the arguments, narration, and logic easy to follow.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the Christian themed flags on January 6, 2021, or who wants to start to understand the religious influences of any future unrest around American elections.

Historia
Social media influencer and podcast host April Ajoy wouldn’t have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song “America Say Jesus” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again.

Revisado: 10-03-24
This book would be a must read, but after listening to it, this book has become a must listen. With the creativity and energy April puts into her hilarious viral videos, she uses that talent in reading each and every sentence.
Once I started listening, I know I was going binge listen to it. About two hours in, I was already texting people to get it.
This is definitely one I’ll be listening to over and over again.

"The Great Failure is a boundless embrace, leaving nothing out. I wanted to learn the truth, to become whole. If I could touch the dark nature in someone else, I could know it in myself." So begins Natalie Goldberg in this candid exploration of her life. Here, Goldberg makes sense of primary relationships between father and daughter, teacher and student, and exemplifies the accomplishment available when creating daily writing practices.

Historia
Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Sarah McCammon was strictly taught to fear God, obey him, and not question the faith. Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, and that she, too, would go to hell if she did not believe fervently enough, McCammon was a rule-follower. But through it all, she was plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.

This Is For Those Of Us Who Left Conservative Evangelicalism Behind.
Revisado: 09-24-24
With the storytelling of an NPR journalist (you know, the kind that has you or I taking the long way home to finish listening to a story on the radio,) Sarah weaves her life into her exploration and interviewing of those who have spoke about the world they left behind.
This book is for those of us who asked to many questions and felt the shame of pulling back the curtain on all the things we were told that didn’t add up or make sense.

Historia
In this transcendent memoir, grounded in tribal myth and ancestry, music and poetry, Joy Harjo, one of our leading Native American voices, details her journey to becoming a poet. Born in Oklahoma, Harjo grew up learning to dodge an abusive stepfather by finding shelter in her imagination, a deep spiritual life, and connection with the natural world. She attended an Indian arts boarding school, where she nourished an appreciation for painting, music, and poetry; gave birth while still a teenager; and struggled on her own as a single mother, eventually finding her poetic voice.

Historia
Fumio Sasaki changed his life when he became a minimalist. But before minimalism could really stick, he had to make it a habit. All of us live our lives based on the habits we’ve formed, from when we get up in the morning to what we eat and drink to how likely we are to actually make it to the gym. In Hello, Habits, Sasaki explains how we can acquire the new habits that we want - and get rid of the ones that don’t do us any good.

Maybe the best book on habits so far?
Revisado: 11-18-21
Reading a few books on habits so far, I’m hard pressed to find a more practical and applicable book on habits. This deals with not just the act of establishing a habit, but it takes for the reader to establish one… because it is written out of the author’s own trial and error.
