Historia
The award-winning film biographer presents a deeply-textured, ambitious, and definitive portrait of the greatest movie actor of the 20th century, the elusive Marlon Brando, bringing his extraordinarily complex life into view as never before. The most influential movie actor of his era, Marlon Brando changed the way other actors perceived their craft. His approach was natural, honest, and deeply personal, resulting in performances - most notably in A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront - that are without parallel.

Dull
Revisado: 04-16-25
I listened for three hours while driving long distance. I read a lot of non-fiction and biographies/autobiographies. I found this to be very tedious, and really pretty boring. I might try it again later, but it doesn’t hold my interest. The narration was fine.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Utterly terrifying
Revisado: 09-07-24
Like most everyone who has commented before me, this book has changed me. I’m a prolific reader, but I’ve never “read” anything that kept me up at night thinking, and sometimes even tearful. It’s that gripping and well researched. This book has made me very cognizant that the end of the world is an event that we’re frighteningly close to. It could happen in the blink of an eye and literally be over within an hour of the first launch of a nuclear warhead. The book is thoughtfully laid out with minute-by-minute descriptions of what could happen for mankind’s last hour. I would recommend this book for anyone who is ready to face facts. What have we done?

Our capital city has always been a thriving and colorful place, full of diverse and determined individuals developing trade and finance, exchanging gossip and doing business. Abandoned by the Romans, rebuilt by the Saxons, occupied by the Vikings and reconstructed by the Normans, London would become the largest trade and financial center, dominating the world in later centuries. London has always been a brilliant, vibrant, and eclectic place.

I enjoyed this book enough to listen to it twice. I thought the narrator was fine for this kind of book.

Classic True Crime
Revisado: 11-18-21
I think this book is the one all other true crime stories are measured by. When you first look into buying it, it seems that it would be waaay too long at 27+ hours, and perhaps there would be too much flabby filler. However, you actually do need the WHOLE story to come out, and this book genuinely does deliver with page-turning interest all the way to the end. I listen during my hour-long drive to and from work, and found that I sometimes lingered just to hear the end of a chapter. If you enjoy true crime and haven’t stumbled across this one yet, I promise this book is certainly worth the credit.

Historia
In 1977, 20-year-old Colleen Stan left home to hitchhike from Oregon to California. Seven years later she emerged from hell, the victim of a bizarre and extraordinary crime. Known as the "sex slave" or "girl in the box" case, here's the whole story - too strange to be anything but true - of Colleen's horrifying imprisonment by Cameron Hooker. Told by the district attorney who tried the case, it is a tale of riveting intensity and gripping courtroom drama.

Can’t get past the horrible narration
Revisado: 05-01-18
Amanda Plummer is a good actress, but her narration of this book is so odious that I couldn’t get past the first chapter. I mean, it really IS that bad!

Great twists and turns. Was surprised at how deftly it came together at the end and was almost sorry it was over! I recommend this book, which I read on the tails of "Girl on a Train."

The dead talk - to the right listener. They can tell us all about themselves: where they came from, how they lived, how they died, and, of course, who killed them. Forensic scientists can unlock the mysteries of the past and help serve justice using the messages left by a corpse, a crime scene, or the faintest of human traces.

Very hard to follow

It might have been very good, but I struggled to understand the narrator with her heavy Scottish accent - and I'm a transcriptionist! It was too distracting and I gave up after half an hour.

Historia
Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother.

Not even remotely humorous. Mostly BAD British observations that just aren't funny. I gave up after about an hour listening in the car. Then I skipped around forward trying to find anything worth listening to. I really wanted to like this book and waited for a nice long drive to fully enjoy it. Awfully disappointing overall.

Good stories - HORRIBLE Narration
Revisado: 06-20-16
What would have made The Best of Tom Slemen better?
Someone else narrating!
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I don't know. Too painful to listen to. Too fast and badly read.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Nicholas Patrella?
ANYONE!!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Best of Tom Slemen?
I don't know. Didn't listen to anymore after about 20 minutes. Actually painful to listen too.
Any additional comments?
Would love to have listened to the stories, but the narrator made that impossible. I actually returned the book because I was so frustrated.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."
