Historia
It is autumn 1981 when inconceivable horror comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenager is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last—revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day. But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door—a girl who has never seen a Rubik’s Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd.

It takes some… unexpected turns. Very adult very dark, quite an enjoyable vampiric horror read.

Each book, unfortunately, gets worse
Revisado: 04-12-24
The series starts with a great fantasy premise, riddled with allusions to real history and spiced with a pantheon of beastly deities.
As it evolves, though, the riddled allusions become muddled plot points, and the main character never grows or redeems herself, or frankly, even finds a real personality that isn’t “be someone else’s soldier, bury the pain.” I wanted more for her, and for this saga, but I ended up closing the final book regretting I ever opened the first one.

Historia
The Jungle is the story of Jurgis Rudkus, a Slavic immigrant who marries frail Ona Lukoszaite and seeks security and happiness as a workman in the Chicago stockyards. Once there, he is abused by foremen, his meager savings are filched by real estate sharks, and at every turn he is plagued by the misfortunes arising from poverty, poor working conditions, and disease. Finally, in accordance with Sinclair’s own creed, Rudkus turns to socialism as a way out.

A masterpiece, comrade!
Revisado: 03-23-24
Insightful and haunting, made me viscerally angry multiple times, as the author no doubt intended.

The narrators do all they can, but it’s not enough
Revisado: 03-06-23
The simple prose and unbelievable twists (not in a good way) can’t be redeemed by the tremendous efforts of the narrators to breathe life into a lifeless novel.

Book is more of a formatted worksheet that is interspersed with little tidbits of narration. It also seems to deviate pretty significantly from the original, which I loved.

Historia
Into the Gray Zone takes listeners to the edge of a dazzling, humbling frontier in our understanding of the brain: the so-called "gray zone" between full consciousness and brain death. People in this middle place have sustained traumatic brain injuries or are the victims of stroke or degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Many are oblivious to the outside world, and their doctors believe they are incapable of thought.

Superb Listening, and more importantly, super important information!
Revisado: 11-27-22
Recommend this to anyone with even an ounce of interest in the brain and consciousness. Never bogged down, always clear and, at times, heart wrenching. This book will make you rethink how you view non responsive patients and make you reevaluate what you want for yourself, should the worst ever happen,
