Historia
Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.

Beautiful, Lyrical Voice and Vivid Stories
Revisado: 11-15-21
I loved listening to the writer narrate her own beautiful, lyrical stories of her childhood as a "brown girl dreaming." This was my first book by this prolific, award-winning author, and I look forward to reading many more of her books.

Historia
For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

Excellent book. Learning about the four characters in my brain, getting to know them and name them is a game-changer going forward. I wish I had this info and these tools earlier in my life. Thank you, Jill Bolte Taylor, for this book, for fighting back from your stroke to share this invaluable information with a world that desperately needs it!

Historia
Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who found himself at the center of a firestorm for his decision to report the infamous phone call that led to presidential impeachment, tells his own story for the first time. Here, Right Matters is a stirring account of Vindman's childhood as an immigrant growing up in New York City, his career in service of his new home on the battlefield and at the White House, and the decisions leading up to, and fallout surrounding, his exposure of President Trump's abuse of power.

A Must-read Book by and about an American Patriot
Revisado: 08-20-21
Several weeks ago, I watched the excellent interview of Alexander Vindman on CBS Sunday Morning,. Afterwards, I bought his book, which I have found to be riveting, inspiring and well-crafted. I had not watched Vindman's testimony at the impeachment but had been well aware of it through the media. Vindman has my profound respect and gratitude for doing the right thing and standing up for the Constitution. I will be recommending his book widely. I wish him all the best as he continues his mission to serve the U.S. offering his many outstanding skills and talents. Alexander Vindman is a true American patriot and a national treasure.

Now I want to read more about Belle--thanks for the suggestions for further reading. I also want to read more books by each of these writers.

Historia
As revelatory as Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson’s Elderhood is an essential, empathetic look at a vital but often disparaged stage of life. For more than 5,000 years, 'old' has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment that humans are living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease.

A Map for Our Third Act -- Elderhood
Revisado: 07-13-21
I listened to Elderhood as I'm navigating life supporting my 90-year-old mother and 94-year-old father. I'm in the thick of it. I'm grateful for the empathetic companionship, vision and advocacy of Louise Aronson as I strive to honor my incredible parents as they grow more vulnerable and more dear. I'm grateful for her calls for systemic transformation in our healthcare institutions. Hers is a much needed voice in these times.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Tiffany Haddish is not only a hilarious stand-up comedian, a brilliant actor, a gifted planetary healer, and an amazingly generous, energetic, transparent human being, she is also a genius storyteller and author. I love this book and Tiffany's narration. Now I can't wait to watch her award-winning "Black Barmitzvah," her show "Kids Say the Darndest Things," and "Tuca and Bertie." And can't wait to see what else this beautiful Black Unicorn will create!

Excellent memoir. I loved hearing Vice President Kamala Harris' story told in her voice. She is a brilliant leader and prosecutor, a "joyful warrior," as she says, in the fight for justice and a country where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Historia
The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Brave Enough to Be a Light
Revisado: 02-10-21
Sarah Kendzior, a Midwesterner and a brilliant journalist, is "brave enough to be [a light]," to borrow the words of inaugural poet Amanda Gorman. In "Hiding in Plain Sight: The Invention of Donald Trump and the Erosion of America," Kendzior rivets us with the chilling story, played out in clear view on our national stage, of a cruel, corrupt autocratic leader and his enablers, both domestic and foreign. Kendzior's engaging analysis of the rise of this autocratic regime foreshadows the inevitability of the horrific historical event on Jan. 6, 2021, an insurrection, the desecration of the U.S. Capitol, and the death of seven people. Kendzior, also a mother of two children, takes us along with her family in the final chapter, "End Times Road Trip," a beautiful, heartrending close to a must-read book for any U.S. citizen who dares to dream that our democracy will and must survive.

Historia
When Brian Doyle passed away at the age of 60 after a bout with brain cancer, he left behind a cult-like following of devoted listeners who regard his writing as one of the best-kept secrets of the 21st century. Doyle writes with a delightful sense of wonder about the sanctity of everyday things, and about love and connection in all their forms: spiritual love, brotherly love, romantic love, and even the love of a nine-foot sturgeon.

Essays by a Master Storyteller
Revisado: 01-10-21
This collection of essays pulled me in from the start and never let go. Brian Doyle has the Irish gift for telling true tales of the extraordinary shining right there in the everyday. His well-wrought words weave strands of wry humor and humility, faith and doubt, gratitude and wonder. The narrator was excellent, with a voice that brought the author's words to life with natural ease and grace. This book was a balm to listen to at the end of 2020 and start of 2021. I've already bought copies as gifts and will highly recommend this Audible version to others. My heartfelt thanks to Brian Doyle who left these words behind and to all those who labored to share them with a world that mightily needs them.
