Slice of (super-powered) life
Revisado: 07-10-24
If you’ve read both of the Villian’s Code books, you’ll know that the author creates wonderfully complex, fully fleshed out characters. These short stories build on that, with fun, slice of life stories

Historia
Gifted with meta-human powers, Tori Rivas kept away from the limelight, preferring to work as a thief in the shadows. But when she's captured trying to rob a vault that belongs to a secret guild of villains, she's offered a hard choice: prove she has what it takes to join them or be eliminated. Apprenticed to one of the world's most powerful (and supposedly dead) villains, she is thrust into a strange world where the lines that divide superheroes and criminals are more complex than they seem.

A fun new take on an old genre
Revisado: 07-04-24
This is an interesting spin on the superheroes genre. It’s well written; the characters (hero’s and villains) are relatable, the obstacles are realistic, and the world works.
I admit, when I read the synopsis I was worried that this would be one of those stories with a female lead who has amazing powers and she’s super feisty and her greatest weakness is that she can’t choose between the two handsome men courting her. Thankfully this is not that story. I’ll definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

Historia
Dirk never wanted to end up on Zaroff's island. He'd cheated and lied, stole and tricked, begged and crawled, all to save his own life, one payment at a time. But now the debt's come due, and Dirk missed his payments. He must muster every ounce of guile and strength at his disposal, must embrace the supernatural powers he'd struggled with for so long, must call upon allies both old and new to face the most terrifying foe a man can face . . . the consequences of his own actions. He doesn't know if he'll survive, but he won't go down without a fight.

Fantastic
Revisado: 05-28-24
Part mystery, part secret agent intrigue, part buddy comedy, it all adds up to a wonderfully unique story. I was happy to find that these books aren’t trying to be a retelling of Sherlock Holmes, but are a really fun way to play with that body of work. This is a fantastic example of how a classic character in the public domain can be made into something new and wonderful.

Sherman Holmes has officially settled into his new city, and the World's Greatest Detective Agency has opened its doors. While his put-upon partner, Watson, would be happy to keep the jobs as simple as missing pets, when a worried worker with an outlandish tale of ghosts walks in, there's no stopping Sherman from taking the case. Now, the new duo must investigate a local "haunted" tourist site where the scares are going off-script and otherworldly interference is suspected.

Horror-comedy with an unconventional protagonist, what’s not to love? If you like the John Dies at the End series, or Tales From the Gas Station, give this a listen, I think you’ll like it.

A thoroughly pleasant listen
Revisado: 03-28-24
All of the whimsy and humor I’d hoped for, with an interesting premise to boot. It’s a strange thing to say about a story centered around the supernatural guardian of a theme park, but I really liked how realistic the characters were. They aren’t walking tropes, they interact with the plot in a believable way. I look forward to seeing more from the author.

Really well done
Revisado: 03-22-24
This is one of those books that’s at its best in an audio format. The narrators makes the story feel intimate and personal, cultivating a vulnerability in the protagonist and putting the reader in the role of confessor and judge. The story itself is interesting, and more nuanced than I had expected going in; it demands introspection as it questions the intersection between right and good and necessary.
