Historia
There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has been only one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legend of Marine lore. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines. His record has never been matched: 93 confirmed kills. This is his story. Powerful, chilling, and all true.

Mostly fictionalized.
Revisado: 10-18-19
This book is embarrassingly bad. The author states at the beginning that the dialogue was fictionalized. Facts comprise about 10% of this book, and the rest is fictionalized dialogue. The written dialogue is horrendously poor and expository. Even the most famous kill is barely more than a sentence of facts, while the rest of that particular story is imaginary dialogue.
The author should be embraced of this work.

Historia
A gut-wrenching, beautiful memoir which explores toxic masculinity and the devastating consequences of war on one impressionable young soldier Matt Young joined the Marine Corps aged 18, after a drunken night that culminated in him crashing his car into a fire hydrant. The teenage wasteland he fled followed him to the training bases of California. Young survived training and then three deployments to Iraq as an infantryman.

Desperately wants to be Anthony Swofford's Jarhead
Revisado: 03-01-18
Any additional comments?
The author desperately wants "Eat the Apple" to be Anthony Swofford's "Jarhead," but it falls well short. Although it tries to use Swofford's method of writing, it's missing Swofford's raw, yet poetic voice.
Overall, it is a decent read/listen, but the glowing reviews of this book on Amazon.com are clearly from the author's friends and family.

Historia
The fight for Jason Delgado's life and soul began when he was just a boy. He ultimately escaped the death and drugs of a crime-riddled Bronx by way of the US Marine Corps. However, after earning his way into the esteemed ranks of the service's famed Scout Snipers, Delgado saw that old struggle reignited when he was dumped into the hell of war in Iraq. There Delgado proved not only a participant but a warrior capable of turning the tide in several of the most harrowing and historically important battles of the evolving war.

Story is OK, but narrator is horrible.
Revisado: 01-30-18
Any additional comments?
I read about Jason Delgado in Brandon Webb's The Killing School, and was interested in his time as a Marine sniper. His story is OK, but doesn't add much substance to the subject matter. Other books on this topic are more informative and more interesting, with far less ego.
I would urge anyone interested in this book to read the actual book instead of listening to the audiobook. Peter Berkrot's narration is horrible. It's melodramatic and he doesn't know how to properly say the military terms. He also pronounces "oorah" as "yeah". Listening to him made me cringe. The author should be embarrassed to have Berkot reading the book.

The Red Circle: My Life in the Navy SEAL Sniper Corps and How I Trained America's Deadliest Marksmen

Historia
Brandon Webb's experiences in the world's most elite sniper corps are the stuff of legend. From his grueling years of training in Naval Special Operations to his combat tours in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, The Red Circle provides a rare and riveting look at the inner workings of the U.S. military through the eyes of a covert operations specialist. Yet it is Webb's distinguished second career as a lead instructor for the shadowy "sniper cell" that makes his story so compelling.

Good story, but poorly produced audiobook.
Revisado: 01-22-18
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book as a whole is interesting, and Webb and Mann are clearly good at telling stories. A lot of this book is retold in The Killing School, but adds some finer details of Webb's personal journey.
The strange thing about this audiobook is that Brandon Webb summarizes each chapter right before the narrator begins each chapter. He tells the listener what they're about to hear, often times ruining the unfolding of the story. Not sure who thought that was a good idea. Webb would have better served the listener by skipping the summaries and instead, making sure the narrator could properly pronounce military terms. Prospective listeners should read the book instead of listening to this audiobook.
What didn’t you like about Jon Bailey’s performance?
Narrator mispronounced military terms and acronyms. He repeatedly says BUD/S as "b-u-d-s" instead of "buds". Whoever produced this audiobook did the listener a disservice by not taking more pride in their work and making sure everything was right.

Very good story, but the horrible narration made me cringe every time I listened to it. Do yourself a favor and just read the book.
