An incredible story and a brilliant way to present the difficulties and scary reality of the LGBTQIA+ community of generations past! A bit racey at times, but very engaging! Every chapter left me wanting more of Evelyn and more of Monique!

Captivating from the beginning!
Revisado: 07-11-22
I fell in love with the sisters from the beginning. Their personalities were so relatable and the depth of their characters throughout the book was encouraging and kept my interest every step of the way! The ending was perfect. I resonate with this story on so many levels!

and a heartbreaking truth. As I recall the names of each Black person killed by police over the last decade or so, my heart breaks for the reality that POC face every day. The fear, the brutality, the harshness. It's important to have these uncomfortable conversations. My privilege and biases need to be checked and evaluated and then I have an obligation to speak up for POC every chance I get.

Historia
In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a White mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District - a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed 35 square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass?

I choose to lean into the harrowing reality of what it means to live in America and to recognize the privilege of being white. My heart hurts today. I'm grateful these accounts are available to me to learn and witness their powerful testimony.

Lies lived in half truths
Revisado: 02-10-22
Seems everyone had secrets in this novel. Adele, Stella, Deserae, Reese, Jude and Kennedy. Each had their own reasons for the lies the told, the secrets they hid, and the lives they lead because of those secrets. The storyline kept me reading, but all the lies made me so furious with the characters in this book. Lying to Jude about being transgender, Reese stole Jude's freedom to make an educated decision about her relationship with him. Reese not being honest about his entire transition made me loathe his character from the beginning. I think Jude deserved better than his lies about his sexuality. Stella lying about EVERYTHING led her daughter to live a very ungrateful spoiled life with no connection to her mother and little affinity for being a decent human most the time. Coming from a hard life isn't easy to rise above, but by the end of Stella's character in the book, I hated her. I am glad she finally told Kennedy the truth, but she still forced her daughter to lie to protect her future as Mrs. Stella Saunders.
The things that broke my heart about this story was the hate that other POC spewed at Jude and how the degree of blackness was weaponized in that small town. I'm unsure if that kind of vitriol is as prevalent in other predominantly Black communities, or if this was unique to the small town who tried to eradicate their blackness through selective procreation. There were many topics this book breezed past as insignificant but that shape a lot of trauma survivorship that many women endure today.
Overall, I still was captured by the story and needed to keep reading to find out what happened next!

Just what the world needs!
Revisado: 02-08-22
Sincerely a powerful and brave stand made by this young man. I'm checking my own bias as I listen to this courageous man tell his story of trauma and triumph. I'm so grateful this story exists, and look forward to buying a copy for every young man struggling to find himself in society, where no one else looks or feels like him. This compelling story offers hope for a new generation of queer boys, as they desperately search for their own identity. As a white, cishet woman there are so many things I cannot possibly imagine or understand. Yet, I can relate to trauma and wishing I had a story that looked like mine when I was trying to survive those tumultuous waters.

Revisado: 02-07-22
I have loved getting to know Tabby and watching her discover herself and holding true to her boundaries and her own soul. Finding an ally in Lisa at work was such an incredible gift, and gives me hope that I can be that kind of ally in my own workplace. Just because issues may not personally affect me, doesn't mean I can't support those who are affected. I love this woman's bravery, and her willingness to keep fighting for her best life!

Just keep fighting!
Revisado: 02-06-22
A glimpse into the world of a woman of color, and all she has to fight for, trying 10 times harder to get a step ahead. Fighting for her career, her family, her friends, her emotions, her relationship, her future. Many times, I could relate to Tabby's struggle; just wanting to stop fighting for one moment and breathe. I loved the insight into cultural struggles that growing up in a mixed racial family created for Tabby and her grandmother and their family. Great narration too! There were times the narrator sped up in the story, adding credence to the exhausted nature of all that Tabby was experiencing and I got caught up in the emotion of her narration. I fell in love with Tabby, even though at times her ignorance was frustrating to no end.
