The writing style of this book comes off as very opinionated, nearly to the point of being confrontational. Donaghue would have done well to spend more time unpacking and backing up his wild proclamations like asserting that traditional models of sexual education are child abuse. Instead, he positions these broad-brush assertions as factual without actually supporting them with research (or even anecdotal evidence). If you're in the mood for an opinionated rant about the restrictiveness of our culture around sex and sexuality - and I don't entirely disagree with his point of view, I just find the presentation over the top - you might enjoy this book. On the other hand if you're looking for something a little more educational, there are far more informative books out there dealing with the topics presented here.

As a therapist I found a lot of great practical advice in this book which I intend to put into action helping my clients work towards healing from sexual trauma. The book does a great job of exploring the various symptoms resulting from trauma including anxiety around sex, shame, attachment issues, body issues, self esteem, etc. It also provides a number of actual activities designed to help survivors (and thrivers) process the events that happened, acknowledge the impact it has had on both their personal and relational development and satisfaction, and to help individuals - and by extension, couples - move past trauma to more fulfilling and enjoyable sex-lives.

I'm teaching a class in the fall on mental disorders, and purchased this book looking for something easily accessible and inexpensive to introduce students to mental health issues. Within minutes I started detecting minor errors and misquotations, but it was the author's claims of being divinely directed through his dreams that made me stop listening. Needless to say, I'll keep searching for another introductory text directed at a lay-person audience and add that anyone trying to understand mental disorders from a modern scientifically grounded perspective should approach this book with caution.
