Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

A personal diatribe against AA
Revisado: 07-21-24
The author gives good tips around quitting alcohol, but often it feels like a personal diatribe against AA, even as the suggestions for change follow the AA program. Still, it’s helpful advice for those who are unwilling to give AA an honest shot.

Makes you fall in love with nature
Revisado: 11-09-23
This is a fascinating biography of John Muir, with a good mixture of stories and direct quotes. The story makes you love the man and fall in love with nature. Good narration as well.

An insightful breakdown of America before and during Obama‘a first term
Revisado: 01-14-21
“The Promised Land” provides an insightful and thought provoking description of the complex issues that occurred before and during Obama’s first term. I recognized so many events that I had lived through, but the narrative provides so much insight into the broader forces and challenges that informed my experiences during those years, reports in the media, and my own perceptions of things. Obama repeatedly points to the American ideals that I ascribed to growing up in America, which I have seen threatened in recent years and viewed more critically while living abroad. Obama presents a thorough unpacking of the complexities involved in his administration. It also subtly provides insights into the ultimate rise of the Trump administration and the attacks against American democracy that have arisen over recent years. All is well presented, making for a long but generally engaging listen. As a whole, it inspires me to hold on to the ideals of American democracy that once inspired me, while helping me acknowledge the complex forces that fight against those ideals.
