Not about Menieres.
Revisado: 12-09-24
The title is misleading. Lots of medical information about inflammatory bowel disease. Only a four minute chapter on Menieres which has no useful information for sufferers of Menieres.

Historia
In Iain Reid’s second haunting, philosophical puzzle of a novel, set in the near future, Junior and Henrietta live a comfortable, solitary life on their farm, far from the city lights, but in close quarters with each other. One day, a stranger from the city arrives with alarming news: Junior has been randomly selected to travel far away from the farm...very far away. The most unusual part? Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Henrietta won't have a chance to miss him, because she won't be left alone - not even for a moment.

So many inconsistencies
Revisado: 12-14-23
I bought this book after I heard a podcast about the movie adapted from it. Let’s hope the movie is better than the book. It read like a first draft. Too many inconsistencies in the plot and characters. I kept reading out of curiosity but was not impressed.
I feel that with more editing and rewriting, the author could have created a better version.

Beautiful story - some jump scare voices
Revisado: 10-31-21
I listened as an adult, because I love J.K.Rowling and it did not disappoint.
However for little ones listening, beware there are some very scary loud voices and sounds that are ‘jump scare’ moments.

Historia
The first full-length biography of Sarah Winchester, the subject of the movie Winchester starring Helen Mirren, now available for the first time in audio. Since her death in 1922, Sarah Winchester has been perceived as a mysterious, haunted figure. After inheriting a vast fortune upon the death of her husband in 1881, Sarah purchased a simple farmhouse in San José, California. She began building additions to the house and continued construction on it for the next twenty years. A hostile press cast Sarah as the conscience of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company—a widow shouldering responsibility for the many deaths caused by the rifle that brought her riches. She was accused of being a ghost-obsessed spiritualist, and to this day it is largely believed that the extensive construction she executed on her San José house was done to appease the ghouls around her. But was she really as guilt-ridden and superstitious as history remembers her? When Winchester’s home was purchased after her death, it was transformed into a tourist attraction. The bizarre, sprawling mansion and the enigmatic nature of Winchester’s life were exaggerated by the new owners to generate publicity for their business. But as the mansion has become more widely known, the person of Winchester has receded from reality, and she is only remembered for squandering her riches to ward off disturbed spirits.

Compelling historic listening
Revisado: 12-28-17
Having just visited the Winchester Mystery House I was curious to know more, especially as a Hollywood movie based on Sarah Winchester, played by Helen Mirrin, has been made. I wanted the facts not the hype.
This book is based on letters, notes, receipts, documents and direct telling from descendants of staff who knew the real story.
The book reveals that Sarah Winchester was not a spiritualist plagues by guilt and afraid of ghosts, but a skilled self educated architect and designer who built many houses including the now tourist attraction in San Jose.
Because she did not socialize, the town folk made up stories about her which warped into the mysterious tales we hear about her today. All are untrue, especially the movie!
The audio book reads somewhat like a textbook in style, it is not a story, but I found it compelling and extremely interesting.

Historia
It is the spring of 1802, and the village of Paradise is still reeling from the typhoid epidemic of the previous summer. Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have lost their two-year-old son, Hannah’s half brother Robbie, but they struggle on as always: the men in the forests, the twins Lily and Daniel in Elizabeth’s school, and Hannah as a doctor in training, apprenticed to Richard Todd. Hannah is descended from healers on both sides - one Scots grandmother and one Mohawk - and her reputation as a skilled healer in her own right is growing.

As good as if not better than Outlander.
Revisado: 08-16-17
As a lover of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, I read Lake in the Clouds and Sara Donati's previous book in this series ready to compare them negatively. NOT SO!
I actually enjoyed Donati's writing more and found myself totally immersed in the sweeping saga. Gabaldon applies a formulaic style of sensory writing which often stilts the action while she stops to describe a smell or a fabric. Donati's weaves her sensory descriptions seemlessy and naturally into the narrative.
I fell in love with her characters and am now a big fan of her work. This series is well worth the read.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

A graceful heart rending story.
Revisado: 04-05-15
I adore Alan Cumming and felt so privileged to listen to him open up about his painful past. Hearing some bribe else's history brings up your own and makes you realize that every single one of us has hurts and traumas behind the laughing supposed happy facades we present to the world.
Alan's writing is eloquent, not just an autobiographical account, but clever and certainly moving prose.

Worth the listen. Wish the author hadn't read it.
Revisado: 02-23-15
A detailed and somewhat clinical portrayal of a real person's journey from lucidity to a lost world through the ravishes of Alzheimer's disease. Worth the read to understand the experience first hand. I only wish it had been read by someone other than the author. It was flat and monotonous.

An interesting change of pace.
Revisado: 08-25-10
From the many negative reviews on this episode of the series, I listened expecting the worst. However, after the initial adjustment of listening to a new narrator, I found it an interesting change of pace to the unabridged previous books. Diana Gabaldon writes from a sense perspective and I must admit to sometimes simply enduring the 'formula' descriptions of every sight, sound, smell, touch and taste in the unabridged tomes. Having said that, I am looking forward to getting onto the next full length book. As for Geraldine James's interpretation, she deserves credit for her dramatisations and perfect accents. I think being used to the sound of and being spoilt by Davina Porter's graceful reading, listeners have been too harsh on Geraldine.
