This historical fiction is more than just your average historical "romance". Laura Kinsale's masterful character driven tale is rich with details seen through the eyes of "polar opposite" lovers. The classic Gothic elements of mental health, spiritual visitations, and restoration through the miracle of love are woven in with great care. Though a "long" story by Audible standards, there is never a wasted word.
This wonderful story is exceptionally narrated by Nicholas Boulton, whose native accent lends an extra layer of authenticity to the entire production.
Bravo!
I look forward to more titles by Laura Kinsale!

I love this series! Ian Hamilton is flawed but lovable and relatable. The introduction of new characters is proving to enrichen the landscape of the Hamilton clan.
This particular book deserves a warning for childhood assault survivors. There are a few graphic, childhood assault scenes which could be triggering. Fortunately these scenes are short and easily skipped.

This tale interweaves deeply complex aspects of the human experience. Acceptance of the self, death, grief, the legacy of intergenerational trauma, hope, and the pleasure of discovering an alien lifeform willing to aid humanity.
Combining all of these topics into a short story is no easy task yet VERY well done here. Bravo!
