Historia
After the Civil War, the pillars of Black Republicanism were a balanced critique of both political parties, civil rights for all Americans, reinventing an economy based on exploitation, and, most importantly, building thriving Black communities. How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries like Frederick Douglass to the puppets in the Trump era?

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

The great scholar, W. E. B. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.

Emotional roller coaster. What a ride!
Revisado: 01-14-22
This should be a part of the history curriculum required reading at the post high school level. I experienced so many emotions while listening to this brilliant story. I felt so much pain for the ancestors. I also felt their joy. We cannot even begin to imagine what it took for us as a people to be here today. A MUST read for the HUMAN race.

Prepare for an emotional rollercoaster ride...
Revisado: 11-20-18
This book led me on a journey of roller coaster emotions. Well written and heartfelt. I listened via Audible as Mrs. Obama read this so eloquently. She never forgot where she came from. I think that's why she's so relatable. I can't claim home as the South side of Chicago, but Illinois is where I was born and bred. She is my best friend in my head and if she ever comes any where near Atlanta, GA, I would love to have my book autographed. May God continue to bless and keep her and her beautiful family. They made us proud as our first family and continue to do so. Absolutely love and miss them!

Especially since he'd found the woman of his dreams and proposed marriage to her, with one stipulation - a stipulation that caused Jewel to hand the ring right back. Add to that the fact that his father is out of prison and he now has to face his feelings for the man who left him in his greatest hour of need. And if all of that wasn't enough, his long-held secret is about to be revealed.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Narrator. Although it took him almost the whole book to reach his aha moment, he was finally able to see the world and people in it without his original naiveté.
Have you listened to any of Joe Morton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time for Joe Morton. I hope to find others. He is fantastic and made the book come alive and very interesting.

These are the firsthand accounts of sisters Helen and Barbara Shores about growing up with their father, Arthur Shores, a prominent Civil Rights attorney, during the 60s in the Jim Crow south Birmingham district - a frequent target of the Ku Klux Klan. Between 1948 and 1963, some 50 unsolved Klan bombings happened in Smithfield where the Shores family lived, earning their neighborhood the nickname “Dynamite Hill.” Due to his work, Shores’ daughter, Barbara, barely survived a kidnapping attempt.

Great history lesson!
Revisado: 06-25-15
What made the experience of listening to Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill the most enjoyable?
Just learning about a behind the scenes legend such as Arthur D. Shores and his amazing legacy was the great experience.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Helen was my favorite. She was feisty and got angry the same way I think I would have in her same situation. I love that she went on and followed in her father's footsteps.
Which character – as performed by Valeri Ross – was your favorite?
Helen Shores Lee (now Honorable Helen Shores Lee)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book made me laugh and cry. Laugh as Helen got whoopings for being hard headed and crying for all the senseless deaths and uphill struggles as well as the victories.
Any additional comments?
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys learning about our history. We are all familiar with the Civil Rights activists who were in the forefront, but this is one that should be in the history books. I would LOVE to see a documentary of this phenomenal man. I will probably read this book again.
