Historia
For years, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles.

Hard to follow
Revisado: 07-06-24
A combination of story storyline and narration made it difficult to follow. I tried backing up to delisted but it didn’t help. The mysterious unnamed character was annoying.

Virtual Voice a flop.
Revisado: 02-05-24
I am glad that I did not use a credit to buy to this as I would be asking for it back. I could not listen for more than a few chapters. The story might possibly be interesting but the Virtual Voice narration was totally boring. There was no real dynamic variation of tone or accent or even pacing to give the characters individuality. There were no gender variations either so that they all sounded like middle class, educated men sitting around a dinner table having a chat rather than convicts on the way to the moon to serve what was promised to be hard labor with no possibility of returning home.. There were mis-pronounced words and repetitions which probably were the fault of poor editing. I am a longtime fan of Audible so it is disappointing to think that money saving efforts might lead to inferior recordings. I have favorite narrators that I search out along with my favorite authors and I would be very disappointed should the use of Virtual Voice replace the real thing.

Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Hurrah! They're back!!!
Revisado: 10-31-19
Spoiler alert. At the end of the last DC Smith book I was afraid that I would have to say farewell to the wonderful, quirky, funny cast of characters that I had come to so enjoy. I was also in shock and dread about the fate of Smith himself. But with Songbird I can relax and look forward to many more opportunities to enjoy this world of crime as created by Peter Grainger. The newly promoted DS Waters takes center stage but is strongly supported by his fellow officers - the good, the bad and the cantankerous. He is also a bit haunted by the occasional voice of DC Smith speaking words of wit and wisdom over his shoulder. Added into this is the possibility of a move to the newly constituted murder squad headed by the interesting, sharp and a little bit scary DCI Freeman.
Narrator Gildart Jackson is as ever, an absolute joy. He adds to the pleasure of this series with just the right tone and an impressive bag of accents and individual vocal characterizations. Between author and narrator Songbird is filled with a population of fascinating individuals and I look forward to many more hours of time spent with them.

Historia
In the year 2243, the Moon belongs to the dead. The largest graveyard in the solar system, it was the perfect solution to the overcrowding and environmental problems that had plagued mankind for centuries. And the perfect place for Cali Washington to run away from her past. But when a mysterious meteor crashes into one of the Moon’s cemeteries, Cali and her fellow Caretakers find themselves surrounded by a terrifying enemy force that outnumbers them more than a thousand to one. An enemy not hindered by the lack of air or warmth or sustenance. An enemy that is already dead.

Zombies on the moon
Revisado: 05-04-19
I got this book because I love the reader, Ray Porter. As usual he gave his slightly sardonic rendition of many voices and characters with energy and nuance. But it was all in the service of yet another zombie story, this time set on the airless moon. An ancient evil force tumbling through space for eons senses an opportunity to wreck havoc and lands on the moon, which has become the great cemetery for mankind. The bodies become reanimated and chaos ensues. The action was repetitive, the characters under developed and the only real tension centered around who would die next and in what gruesome way. A so so listen...

Historia
It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors of the human species set off after the planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor. On the Worldship Humility, Sam, a 30-year-old Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

Brilliantly entertaining!!!
Revisado: 02-22-19
I very seldom write reviews, but I really want to convince everyone to listen to this delightful book! Firstly, it is not really a traditional SciFi novel but rather a crazy, funny, outrageous, richly told novel that takes place on an ark ship 123 years after leaving an earth facing complete destruction. The characters are many and varied and the story multi-layered much like the 40 + levels on the Humility. Mankind has left earth in search of a new world but has carried along all of the foibles, political shenanigans, relationship woes and darker personas that existed on old Earth. The narrator, Colin Morgan, is brilliant at creating unique, sometimes hysterical voice portraits of each of the wonderful characters given to him by the author, R. R. Haywood. There were lots of laugh out loud moments along the way and I only hope that a sequel is in the works!!!

Historia
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley, and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War.

Revisado: 09-18-17
What made the experience of listening to A Legacy of Spies the most enjoyable?
Le Carre's books are always richly textured explorations of character, motivation, action and consequence. Tom Hollander's narration takes the text to an even richer level. Bravo!

Historia
An Antarctic research team discovers a perfectly machined gold canister, 2500 feet below the surface of the ice. There are strange and unrecognizable markings on the canister. How did it get there, and where did it come from? It is sent back to a research center in the US where it is opened in an environmentally controlled room. Inside are six human embryos, and even more shocking is the discovery that the embryos are viable.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The idea behind the story is interesting but shallow plot and character development left me irritated and impatient.
Any additional comments?
The editing of the reading was very sloppy.

American doctor Tara Moore wants to disappear. On the run from an abusive husband, she seeks shelter on a windswept Irish island and dismisses the villagers' speculation that she is descended from a selkie - a magical creature who is bewitching the island. But when a ghostly woman appears to her with a warning, Tara realizes it was more than chance that brought her to this island.

Engaging and atmospheric romance
Revisado: 06-05-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Selkie Spell to be better than the print version?
I think that hearing the language in this particular case really enhances the feeling of being in the world of the book.
What about Hollis McCarthy’s performance did you like?
Hollis McCarthy was the perfect reader for the novel. She has a rich voice which combined with her handling of the narrative helped to paint a rich picture of the island and its inhabitants. She really excelled with the lilting Irish accents in all of their variety. She is adroit in creating different characters. I hope that she will continue reading the rest of the series.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I was drawn into the story immediately and although I knew the outcome would be a positive one, I remained engaged with the characters and action until the end.
Any additional comments?
Beyond the romance and mystery at the center of the plot I was drawn into the life and world of the island and the people who lived there. I really think that listening to The Selkie Spell read aloud is the best way to enjoy the richness of the world created by Sophie Moss and Hollis McCarthy. Good job all around!
