Feminism for the male gaze
Revisado: 04-16-24
This book has baffled me; I made it about halfway through before I finally had to DNF it. The story could be interesting, and the spice seemed like it had possibilities, but I stopped before it got anywhere. What made me put this book down was a number of weirdly misogynistic/gross comments that male characters made to each other or to the female main character. There are also points when the female main character's internal dialog feels like how men wished feminists thought, 'I'm a feminist, and the men I've dated were all hippy feminists (to piss off my army general father) with more estrogen than I have and I wished they were less feminist and had more testosterone', it felt like it was straight out of a men's rights fantasy. At this point, I checked to see if the books were written by a man under a feminine pen name, nope. There were multiple points like this in the portion of the book that I read. Even the female main character's internal thoughts and what she says about feminism felt like it was through a misogynistic lens.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Riveting
Revisado: 10-17-19
I’m not the biggest fan of these types of books but I’m a huge Ronan Farrow fan (and a friend of The Pod) so I had to read this one. I found the writing remarkably engaging, poignant and occasionally funny. A must read to really understand how our world works these days.
Favorite bit was Jonathan telling Ronan to tip the taxi driver really well since he had just had an emotional breakdown in the back seat.

Historia
From the internationally acclaimed best-selling author of Code Name Verity comes a stunning new story of pearls, love and murder. Sixteen-year-old Julie Beaufort-Stuart is returning to her family's ancestral home in Perthshire for one last summer. It is not an idyllic return to childhood. Her grandfather's death has forced the sale of the house and estate, and this will be a summer of good-byes. Not least to the McEwen family - Highland travellers who have been part of the landscape for as long as anyone can remember.

I LOVED Code Name Variety but I was still surprised how much I enjoyed this book.
